My 7month old keeps banging his head on his mattress usually before sleep in what appears to be frustration. Is this behaviour normal at this age?

I'm sure someone here will know for sure but I seem to remember something about a 'headbanging' syndrome to do with going to sleep. Might depend on the exact context I suppose. My ds has, from very early, done a rythmic 'head turning' - lying on his back twisting his head from side to side. Seems for him to be a kind of sleep cue. When i see him do that I know that very soon he will be out for the count.
Why do you feel your ds is doing it out of frustration?

VoLuataire · 09/08/2006 22:19

My DS is definetely a head banger, particularly when he is frustrated.
Haven't notice anything particular at bed time, but have read and have been told that head banging is a somewhat common manifestation of frustration. They scare me though!

he always had trouble going to sleep on his own, always needed shushed, patted, etc, always a crying match! So i assumed he just got frustrated because he didn't know how to go to sleep even when he was exhausted!

I was just going to post a similar question.
My 8 mo DS has just started standing up and banging his head against the wall at the side of his cot, he seems to think it's funny too

Is it anything to be concerned about?

ProfessorGrammaticus · 10/08/2006 13:23

no it's normal they'll stop when it hurts

babyonboard · 10/08/2006 13:31

Thanks, I assumed as much.
Think it's just a new discovery for him, as last month he learnt that banging the wall with his fist makes a noise and has being doing so at any opportunity since..lol.
Must annoy our neighbours at 4am, but nevermind!
