Really? No rolling?

My 7mo DD just will not roll. She's been trying for AGES and now just lies on her back waving her arms/toys around. She doesn't play with her feet either unless she's sitting on my lap. She does grab stuff if she's really interested in it, pass from one hand to another, and we started BLW with some good results so far. She's a chatterbox and seems to be doing well generally but this lack of movement is really worrying this FTM! I want to relax because I do know she'll do it when she's ready, but she seems to be so behind other babies we know with no sign she'll do anything anytime soon! Will she still be lying there when she's 5???

My dd didn't roll at 7 months but she was happy sitting and quite steady. She never really bothered rolling at all crawled at 14months and has just started walking independently at 21months! I have never been really concerned about her she just likes to do things in her own way.

zgaze · 21/01/2014 22:39

My DD literally never rolled until she was running round the room. I'm not exaggerating. Sat at 4m, crawled at 6 and walked at 12 so quite quick really to do everything else, just not interested in that particular manoeuvre!

AnythingNotEverything · 21/01/2014 22:45

I was reading about rolling recently, as while some do it as early as 12 weeks, some just never do it. Honestly - they walk first.

DS never climbed the stairs. He walked up them once he could, but never crawled up them.

Don't worry. If everything else is fine this isn't a concern.

UniS · 21/01/2014 22:45

DS rolled once at about 4 months and then didn't bother rolling again. He figured out crawling the day after I put a Christmas tree in the living room ( 9 months) and walking ( 14 months) on the day I REALLY wanted him to sit and play while I was volunteering ....

He just had his own time table for doing stuff and hadn't read any "baby development books"

flatmum · 21/01/2014 22:46

2/3 of mine never rolled as babies. The other did it once. Obviously once they were toddlers they could all roll of they wanted too (down hills etc) - but never rolled developmentally.

AGnu · 21/01/2014 23:13

My 7m rolled over for the first time today! I was beginning to think it wasn't going to happen because he'd developed a rather effective way of 'crawling' on his back! Hmm He spent all afternoon/evening rolling now he's figured it out! Hopefully he'll learn to roll back again soon so he'll stop shouting at me when he gets stuck!

He's showing zero interest in sitting up but loves jumping at every possible opportunity. My friend's baby is only a few weeks older but is pulling up on the furniture already! They're all different! I really wouldn't worry about rolling quite yet! Smile

Thanks so much for replies! I'm sure she'll move somehow at some point and I'm sure then I'll wish she'd stay in once place! :-D

Your baby is obviously very intelligent and realises there's little point in learning to roll, it's not a skill you need (when did you last roll?) and she's just resting up until she's ready to walk.

mydaftlass · 23/01/2014 22:55

Neither of mine bothered to roll.

abigboydidit · 24/01/2014 07:36

I posted the same question a few months ago and was relieved to hear that rolling isn't classed as a milestone as not every baby did it. She showed no indication of trying or caring till she was well into her 9th month and then suddenly did it one day. She started crawling a few weeks later. I also think her chubby thighs were a bit of an impediment to rolling Shock

My middle one never rolled. Just went straight to sitting, then crawling!

MummyPig24 · 24/01/2014 10:14

Neither of my children rolled. They sat up at around 6 months and went on to crawl from there.

rallytog1 · 24/01/2014 17:13

They do everything at their own pace. My dd rolled and sat at 3 months and I was v smug. She's now nearly 10mo and showing no signs of crawling whatsoever, to the point where people are asking me if I'm worried about her. There will always be some that seem to do everything early or bang on time, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with those who do things later.

ameliarose2012 · 24/01/2014 20:52

My dd never rolled, or crawled, or pulled herself up on anything. She walked just before her first birthday though and never looked back! The HV told me they worry more about the sitting than crawling as it is more indicative of low muscle tone if they struggle with that. I wouldn't worry if I were you x

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 24/01/2014 22:19

I really wouldn't worry my dd1 didn't roll until 7 or 8 months or so then crawled at 9.5 months and walked a couple of weeks after her b'day. My possé of mummies' babies were all about the same.

DD2 rolled at 4 months or so and was cruising and crawling by 6 months I was gutted shocked.

Skiingmaniac · 24/01/2014 22:27

My ds couldnt lift his head when lying on his front until 6 months, only sat up unaided at 9 months, bum shuffled at 11 months, walked at 11.5 months, never rolled, never crawled, first tooth at 16 months, spoke in sentences by 20months, lost first tooth at 4.8 yrs, couldn't read until 6.5. He is now 7yrs old.....is about 4ft 9/10 inches and scored two tries in rugby today and got 70/72 in his times tables test.....I worried about all of these milestones but have finally accepted that it doesn't matter when they reach the milestones....however, us parents will always analyse them because we care so much Smile
