This week he's been very tired and emotional while also having some difficulty sleeping. He's been waking crying and also crying during the day. When we ask what the matter is he says he doesn't know but he just feels sad all the time. Sad I tried to cheer him up with a tennis party he's going to at the weekend but he just says he's rubbish at tennis. He also says he's been struggling to concentrate at school and got into trouble (this may be the tiredness of course). He's also v hungry so I wondered if he might be growing?
This has all come up quite suddenly and I'm at a bit of a loss. I'm going to have a chat with his teacher. Any other ideas?

Has he been like this since returning to school? My DS (age 7) has been more stroppy/tired/tearful since going back after Christmas. Think most of it was due to worry going back after the holidays. If he wasn't like this before the holidays could something have happened at school, it can only take something very tiny to upset them at this stage. Or maybe he just had such a brilliant Christmas holidays he would rather be at home than school (that's how lots of children feel!). School is hard work even when you're 7.
A growth spurt is very possible, and hormones and all sorts of things.
Have a chat with his teacher to see if something (even very minor) has happened at school that he keeps thinking about.

Thanks for replying and all that sounds really sensible. Am going to have a chat with his teacher tomorrow morning.
He was fine in the holidays and going back - this has come on this week.
Agree about the little things - he was a bit wobbly last summer and it took a lot of probing to discover that it was because my DM had mentioned getting a new puppy and he thought that meant the old dog would be put down...
