Scared of Stair Gates???

Has anyone else experienced this?? Our DD is the happiest little girl and WE THOUGHT nothing phases her at all. As she became mobile we bought a stair gate, perfectly normal you'd think. Everything was fine,we had fun together putting it up,then it came to nap time and our happy little girl was in-consoleable, absolutely hysterical, we didn't know what to do. At first I thought she was ill, as it was just so out of character. Then I noticed she was pointing at the nursery door, the only thing different outside the door was the gate. We took her out to it and explained to her what it was, that it wasn't a barrier and it would be open whilst she was asleep,we hung toys from it,posted things through it, nothing worked. We took it down and she was fine... what can we do? We've got to have one, but I dont want her to be distressed. Why is she so upset by it? Any ideas, anyone else had this happen?

If you don't really need it I don't see why it has to stay up if it bothers your girl that much.

How about reinstalling it when she really needs it?

is the gate actually on her bedroom/ nursery door?

why not try leaving it wide open for a while- she probably feels a bit confined by it. or try decorating it with something like tying balloons to it???? i know, slightly mad idea but it might distract her.

sorry , just read that you already hung toys from it...similar idea to mine.

Naturally we took it down, but we cant understand why she found it so upsetting. It was never closed!!! We had it up for one day and it wasn't used. At her first nap time we thought it might be our imagination, but it came to her afternoon nap and our suspicions were right, it was definately the gate.

Its not on the nursery door but at the top of the stairs. It was only put on for my peace of mind really, so I could put the washing away and other 'upstairs chores' and have her with me, without being terrified of her tumbling down the stairs..... she's so quick!!!!!

The chores can always wait until she's in bed, but we knew we'd need them eventually and thought it could do no harm.

When the time comes that we've absolutely got to have one, I just don't know what we'll do.
