Here's a good one for you.

DS came up to me today, turned around and said 'look mummy'. He had put a plastic play dough knife into his bottom [shock !!!!!!!!

It wasn't in very far but gee god it's so dangerous. The knife has gone away and can only be used when I am supervising play dough time.

I later on caught him trying to put small fabric swatches into his bum!!!

What is this all about? Is he just curious about his bottom?

Thanks Flossom. It certainly is. Thank goodness he is ok. I am soooo relieved I didn't have to call out the fire brigade!!!

Freud calls this the 'anal' phase, it comes after the 'oral' phase - where the center of pleasure is the mouth, apparently, at around the age of potty training a lot of new nerve feelings are well, felt, in the sphincter area, the child places a lot of feelings of pride in being able to hold in and control his expelling of feaces, and with the new feeling there is new curiosity..

not sure if I entirely agree with most of Freud, but there you are - curiousity is natural mine puts his fingers up there frequently..

Completely normal, I think. I could tell you a tale or two about my own childhood - but I won't

curtaintwitcher · 21/07/2006 21:56

Can be quite a normal phase obviously just keep an eye on him and if hes old enough try to explain why not to do it without giving him a complex...lol Toddlers hey who would have em

Reece · 21/07/2006 21:56

That makes sense actually because I have been potty training him for 5 weeks now and he has been having poo accidents for days. He must be thinking about how it all works. He has also been putting his finger up his bum when he feels a poo coming but doesn't understand what is going on.

It's such a hard life eh

Did catch eldest son testing the hoover on his boybits.......he later moved onto wearing my tights and heeled shoes.....younger son liked to put cushions down his pajama bottoms he also liked to hump the cushions ... They are 5 and 8 and have grown out of this now...we just ignored it and put the hoover and my Russell and Bromleys out of reach!!!!

Reece · 23/07/2006 22:29

Ds loves putting my shoes on to!He loves to dress up whilst I am in the shower. I normally come out and find him in my heels with a handbag on his arm and 10 pairs of my pants around his head!!!
