Noises in the night

My 5 and half week old DD makes LOADS of noises when in her Moses basket at night.

Some are what I would call typical 'baby' noises, ie I'm not at all concerned about those ones but some of her other noises are concerning me a little.

The only way I can describe them is like a real agitated grunting kinda sound followed by an imitation machine gun type sound/clearing of her throat.

Yes, I know that sounds bizarre!!!

I should point out that when making these sounds her eyes are closed! She only tends 2 wake when it's nearing feed time or if the noises become frequent.

Any ideas/suggestions??

Newborn babies are often noisy sleepers. I remember telling my HV that it sounded as if DC1 was trying to imitate a farmyard-all that grunting and whinnying!

So it sounds normal to me but if you are worried, ask your HV about it.

My baby can also be quite noisy at night. If you are worried could you video her on your phone when she is making the noises so that you can show this to your hv? It might be easier than trying to describe the noise.

It sounds liker snoring from your description - could be a while before she grows out of that! Grin.

If you are really concerned, the video idea is good one. Does she make the noises during the day?

Hi. My dd2 now 17 weeks has done this since birth. Apparently it can be a sign of reflux or silent reflux. The grunting and throat clearing is baby trying to rid the acid from the back of the throat.

My ds2 is refluxy. What I find helps is keeping him upright for 20-30 mins after feeding ( this can be hard going during night feeds) my HV also gave me gaviscon infant which can be used whether ff or bf.

Taler my 9 week old DD is the same, grunting & snuffling in the wee hours of the morning. She's doing it now abs woke herself up so I'm holding her.

It always seems to stop after she lets out the hugest farts you've ever heard so for her it's just trapped wind!

(I don't understand how someone so small can have so much gas in her)

It's been a while since my dd was that little but I remember her doing exactly the same, like grunting and straining. I was freaked out too, but was told it was perfectly normal!

My DS used to do that when he was a baby, it used to keep me awake.
