2.5 year old is suddenly really hard work...is this normal!

My 2.5 year old DS has suddenly turned into really hard work! Everything, and I mean everything is a problem and to get him to co-operate in an shape or form requires more complex negotiations than a United Nations summit. He will not stay in bed, will not eat, will not wear a coat, shoes, wants me to stay with him at pre-school and if I say no he throws an almighty paddy or just flat out refuses! I have heard of the terrible twos of course but wow wee, is it always this draining every single day? Last night he decided he did not want to sleep around 10pm (he went to bed at 7pm as per usual and settled fine) and refused to stay in bed (he has previously been really good at sleeping) and basically held the entire house to ransom! The only way I could get him to be quiet and sleep was to lie down in bed with him until he fell asleep and I could just tell it was a big power trip (in as much as a 2 year old can have a power trip). If he was an only child I would have just ignored him but I have a 10 month old and his tantrum woke him up so I had both of them screaming. Does anyone have any words of wisdom on how to deal with this extremely negative and trying behavior? Thanks:-).

Totally normal ! They are just so argumentative at this age ! And three I found as well but it will pass

No other advice than be firm with your boundaries and I found counting to ten quite helpful !!

It's the changing of mind and whiny voice I can't handle :)

We are going through exactly the same with my ds 2.8. Nightmare! He has always slept well but last few weeks, every other night he is up for hours. And not just quietly chatting, but shouting, demanding potty, juice, cuddles etc. If I ignore him he opens his door and launches all his teddys over the stairgate. Thursday night he was up from 1am till 5am!! I am just going in to settle him then letting him shout at me for a while (!) Closing the gate om his door and then checking on him every few mins.

He also suddenly wont let me walk in front of him, but if I walk behind he screams 'stop following me!!'. Very challenging stage!
