Scratching habit

Hi all
I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this issue with their LOs?
My DS is 19 wks and is constantly scratching herself to bits to the point of her bleeding.
She's had dry skin from birth but I think a habit has been formed as she scratches me too. She's being referred to a dermatologist but does anyone have any advice on how to help break this habit? I've cut her nails as short as I can get and tried to introduce a comforter.
I really don't want her wearing mitts as it will affect her development for grabbing objects but I'm having to put them on her all the time...

After seeing them recommended on here a friend of mine bought these www.scratchsleeves.co.uk her then 7 month ish baby with eczema. They've been fabulous and haven't impeded him learning to grab, motor skills at all. They really helped with the scratching though.

My baby did this. His face and head were always covered in scratches, it looked like he'd been attacked by a little scratchy kitten! We tried mits but he just pulled them off with his mouth!

He grew out of the habit at around five to six months. He only does it now if he is really over tired and struggling to settle
