Hi My 2 year old boy was a really good sleeper but its been a week now and he is very unsettled for bed. He was in a cot and he already mastered to get out odd few times but he done it alot in one night and just was hysterical to go to bed, we eneded up 12 midnight putting the mattress on the floor for him to sleep, he got up through the night. Next day we converted the cot to a cot bed with cars bedding and he was fine during the day in his room but as soon as it came to bedtime his face changed and started to winge. He kept coming off the bed and I was silent and put him back to bed - went on for an hour and half. In end I had to stand near door and then he fell asleep. He's up through the night and runs towards our room and then we have to either put him back to bed or he puts himself in bed and then wants us to stand near the door so he can fall asleep. Where I am at the moment with him is when I put him to bed I close the door and he falls asleep, I go straight downstairs, during the night he is up 2 or 3 times and we sometimes meet halfway on landing and he runs back to bed and I shut door and go back to bed and he thinks I am standing there. I have bribed him with his favourite dvd's and food but he isn't bothered about missing them items. I can't put a gate in his room because I am worried he will climb over it, there is one on the stairs. How can I get my little boy to stay in bed through the night and not get up?

I have cut his daytime nap to half an hour (he only has 1). Also last Sun I didnt' give him no nap and that didn't work either. I have asked if hes scared, most times he says no then says yes occassionally, think he's playing on it, don't think he fully understands what I am asking him. I thought he might have been frightened because last night he went to bed fine at 7.45 pm but then at 10pm woke up crying, shouting Mam and ran out of his room, luckily I was coming upto bed so he saw me coming up the stairs, he went back in his bed and cried 'mam' for 10 minutes then dozed off. I have spoken to health visitor and she said to just do as I am and whatever is safe for my boy aswell. She said it will take weeks to get back to normal. I sometimes think has he formed a habit of waking up through the night now and with a cot bed he can escape where as the cot he couldn't.
