learning colours- at what age is

I am becoming a bit concerned that my otherwise bright 2.6 DS has no clue about his colours. He is very articulate, knows his numbers, has been picking up key words from books for months and understands some complex concepts but just cannot grasp colours. It is something I regularly bring up during play but it just doen't seem to go in, he remembers the names but ask him what colour two yellow objects are he will say eg. one is red and the other green, even familiar objects like bananas and oranges. At his 2yr check the HV didn't seem worried but I kind of thought that 6mnths later he would have picked it up, should I be worrying? does anyone know anything that can help?

No way should you be worrying.............my 4 year old daughter only just started understanding some colours recently at the end of her nursery time......she is going into Primary school in August. My eldest daughter was the same and is now going into Primary 4 top of her class. So do not worry it does come to them and when it does there is no stopping them...honestly

we wondered if ds2 was colour blind - he seems so bright in other ways we found it hard to fathom that he wouldn't be able to 'get 'it if he could see the colours - just as he turned four he suddenly knew them all bar yellow - which he is still unsure about. My other children were much younger..but i guess its like walking/ talking and so many other developmental things the range thats considiered normanl is very broad. I wouldn't worry

I wouldn't be too concerned as he's developing fine otherwise. DD is 3.5 and to her every colour is green!! One game we play on the walk to school is to say the colours of all the cars we pass...although we soon get bored of all the red and grey cars! I think it will click eventually.

How many numbers can he recognise? You can have him checked at the local opticians but they do get them to recognised numbers or at least be able to trace the number with the finger. It is all done with colours. If he can see the number he can recognise the colour.

plenty of 3yos don't know any colours, my HV told me.

If he can match colours he is fine, jm - the names are just labels, he will get them straight later.
