v. small question about freckles

Just wondered when freckles appear? Dp and especially me are v. freckly so I've sort of assumed dd might be. She's 17 months now and has 1 sole freckle on the back of her left shin which I'm sure she hasn't always had, I'm sure I'd have noticed it. That means it's just arrived and I wondered if it heralds the others.

Not sure really but DS2, now 10, is v freckly. Looking back at photos of himthey weren't really visible until he hit around 4 years old. Suspect it varies from child to child.

agree with the 'older they get' the more freckles-reckon it's to do with the sun as my nephew had none on his back till he got badly sunburnt at age 15 and now he's covered!

Evita · 25/02/2004 09:39

Yes, I'm covered with freckles, especially on my face but looking at photos of me as a v. little girl I didn't appear to have any. You never see v. little kids with freckles do you?

I have been wondering this! My daughter is 3, but is not yet freckly, though I am sure she will be. If I look closely, I can see some very light ones sprinkled across her nose, but that is all.

I wondered the same thing about moles, or beauty spots. Guess they would be the same as freckles.

Bozza · 25/02/2004 14:53

My DS has 3-4 small moles which appeared when he was several months old I think - def not there at birth. (thumb, knee, chin). He has not get any freckles although I am quite freckly - arms, shoulders, face in summer. I'm sure its exposure to sun though. DH gets them across his nose/cheeks when he is on holiday but DS is generally fairly limey.

Freckles I think start to appear at around 4 or 5 yrs old and build up over the years. You can develop new moles up until about 30 years old, apparently, though I guess it's always wise to get new one checked out.

My son is a redhead and probably destined to have freckles. He got some across his nose last year after a holiday abroad aged 3. He loves his freckles though as he thinks they are where the sun has kissed him! I dare say more are on their way this summer!

my dd has 4 freckles on the side of her nose - I have always used a high factor sunscreen but dh and I are quite freckly ourselves. They look v cute just the few of them! She is 2.

My DS's first freckles appeared at 11mths after a 4 week summer holiday in Australia. He had cream and hat on the whole time and when at the beach was in a sun tent, when in his stroller was under a complete shade-a-babe configuration - so I don't think there was more I could have done to prevent them. He has one on his forehead and one on his wrist. I have freckles, but my DH doesn't.

zebra · 25/02/2004 18:35

I didn't have any freckles until I was 9yo. Still don't have lots, but do have them. Must depend a lot on skin tone; mine is pretty olive-y, actually, but I grew up in sunny Southern California.

Evita · 25/02/2004 20:18

Thanks everyone. Ok, I'll keep a closer lookout closer to age 3-4? But there is that mysterious lone freckle on the back of her leg.

Hi Evita, my DD is 22 months and I noticed her first freckle/tiny mole (what's the definition of each?!) on the back of her neck recently . We certainly haven't seen much sun recently either!
