My mate's 3 yr had incredible vocabulary from a v young age. This last month she's become hardly understandable. My mate took her to the doctors yesterday and asked if it could be something pressing on her brain to which he said he couldn't be certain and is rushing her through to see a consultant. I'm terrified so I can't imagine how they're feeling. The GP mentioned adenoids but I can't see how this would totally change her speech? Has anyone else heard of this?

juniper, I was thinking of the little girl too, good luck xxx

BluGhost · 01/04/2004 13:04

Really, really keeping my fingers crossed for this little girl. It seems to have taken AGES for the scan to be set up. Love to all concerned.

tigermoth · 01/04/2004 13:20

juniper, thanks for the update. I am glad the little girl was talking better when you last saw her. Fingers crossed about the scan results.

juniper, re the chickenpox, that rang a faint bell with me and I've been googling - I found - but can't find anything to suggest that chickenpox itself can have the same effect in a child.

But it's great that you can understand her again! Hope they had good news today.

coppertop · 01/04/2004 17:38

I'm so glad things are sounding a bit more positive. Fingers crossed that the results are good. xx

juniper68 · 01/04/2004 18:07

Thanks for the support xx
Poor wee thing had a bad reaction to the sedating drug and my mate said it was like something from the exorcist. The scan was cancelled and she now has to go to a hospital in another town and have a general anaesthetic. My mate is very sensitive to drugs and anaesthetic so maybe it's genetic? Anyway, more waiting At least she seems well though.

SadSad

roisin · 01/04/2004 18:18

Oh how frustrating and worrying to have to go through more waiting

tamum · 01/04/2004 18:30

I'm really sorry. My dd had encephalitis with chickenpox which was terrifying at the time. It can apparently cause hearing loss, but it's temporary. The thing is, I think it would have manifested itself before this if she had CP in November. I do hope it gets sorted out soon.

juniper68 · 01/04/2004 18:35

yes you're right Tamum. I think we're just clutching at straws really. Sorry to hear about your dd, is she ok now?

Thanks juniper68, that's really sweet of you to ask. She's absolutely fine, it only really took her a few days to get over it (and it was a couple of years ago now). It was just so scary seeing her unconscious, only coming round occasionally to talk rubbish and then vomit, but it's amazing how quickly it can resolve. I really, really hope your mate's dd gets better soon. They're lucky to have a friend like you, though.

Evita · 01/04/2004 20:30

Oh, Juniper68, how sad. But it's brilliant news that when you last saw her her speech was better. I hope they don't have to wait a long time for the scan.

On another note I used to share a house with a guy who got chickenpox aged 21 and was really ill with encephalitis which caused his brain to swell temporarily. He ended up in intensive care for a while and afterwards it took him quite a few months to return to normal, his speech, hearing and coordination were all affected. But now you'd never know. However, if this had happened to this little girl the parents would have known at the time so I don't think an ordinary case of chickenpox could cause anything so serious.

Marina · 01/04/2004 22:35

I logged on specially tonight to see if there was news, Juniper. I hope they give this poor family urgent priority and get the matter resolved asap. What a worry meanwhile.
Tamum, that must have been absolutely terrifying at the time. So glad she made a full recovery.

cheers again girls. Glad to hear it Tamum x

She seems to have calmed down now but it took some doin. The doc said bring her back next week and we'll up the dose but thankfully the nurse stuck up for her and said 'she had a really bad reaction' so he agreed to let her get a general at a hospital out of town.

Just thought I'd update... Fdd had an appointmend with a speech therapist on Wednesday and apparently she is well ahead in her understanding and speech. I haven't seen or spoken to Fdd for a couple of weeks and apparently she's 99% back to normal according to friend The speech therapist said she's more like a 4 1/2 to 5 year old with her understanding. In one of the tests the speech therapist got her to look at a picture of a girl with broken glasses and say what it was to which FDD replied 'oh yes she's broken her glasses I once broke my glasses, well it was daddy's fault he was playing with me and he bent the arm and ..........' get the picture I'm soooo happy I could cry She still has to have the scan with general to make sure she's ok.

Brilliant news!

juniper68 · 17/04/2004 14:45

My mate reckons it may have been a virus? Don't really know but it's a miracle and we're glad of it. It's a pity she still need the scan but I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry.
thanks for the messages and positive thoughts. She's been prayed for by a lot of people too so u never know

That is excellent news Juniper, I'm so pleased for them all!

Clayhead · 17/04/2004 20:19

Excellent news.

tigermoth · 18/04/2004 09:15

Really pleased to hear this. Her parents must be over the moon. She sounds ever so aware of things for a 3 year old and so articulate. What a mystery, though. I hope someone finds a reason. Has anyone (parents, doctor) asked the little girl what happened? does she remember losing some of her speech?

juniper68 · 18/04/2004 15:32

She hasn't mentioned anything about it which is strange considering how 'knowing' she is. It's a good thing though. I'll keep you posted on when the scan is.
