My DD is six months, and for the past 8 weeks or so she has had a continual cough cold and runny nose, it varies from week to week as to how bad it can get. When it was really bad about 4 wks ago i took her to docs who said it wasnt anything to be concerend about, her cough wasnt on her chest and sh didnt have any infections. I was told to give her calpol for a few days to help her settle. She kind of got a bit better over the next 2 weeks and has been ok ish for about 1 1/2 weeks, but then yesterday out of the blue she started all over again. Her cough is so bad that she wretches and her little eyes water. All this did conincide with her getting her first tooth ( she has two now) is it really all to do with teething, and does it get batter at all? I dont want to be paranoid android and keep taking her to docs ( she has no fever ) but i feel useless and unable to help...

Have you started weaning yet, and if so, what foods are you using?

Jaysfirst · 08/07/2006 20:51

started at 5 mths ish, and am giving her home made food, carrots sweet potato parsnip sweede. Also stewed apple and pears and some other fruit. Have just introduced finger foods, rice cakes and heinz biscuit things, but nothing out of the ordinary, what do you think?

Could it be hayfever??

expatinscotland · 08/07/2006 21:23

sounds like hayfever to me. dd2 has it, too.

hermykne · 08/07/2006 21:25

try a homepathic remedy if it is hayfever, as i dont think there is anything for under 2's.

have you a nelsons nearby? they are online too.

beansprout · 08/07/2006 21:31

Hayfever sounds likely at this time of year as others have said. There are a lot of children who have a food intolerance (usually dairy) that have these symptoms but you are not using those foods yet. Hope the homeopathic hayfever stuff helps.

thanks ladies for your input, it might well be hayfever i will look into it further. Although DH nad i have both also come down with a cold, so i dont know!!

hi jaysfirst, my little girl had a persistant cold for the first year of her life, don't know why, she was born in summer.she even failed her first hearing test because she was so bunged up!now and then it would clear up and we would have a week of feeling well followed by yet another cold! when she got to about one, i started to notice an improvement, now that she's two she's never ill! maybe its just one of those things? just a thought though, have you got pets?could it be an allergy?

Jaysfirst · 10/07/2006 19:31

Just to let you know, i took her back to the docs who said she had an ear infection poor little thing, anyway she has some antibiotics and hopefully it will clear up quickly!
btw, we do have a cat, but since she has been in contact with it since birth i didnt think it would be that, still at least i know now!

FWIW Jaysfirst, my DD was very much like yours with coninual colds, coughs etc and we put her onto Soya milk. Made a big difference it seems although it could of course have been a coincidence.

hermykne · 10/07/2006 19:57

jaysfirst thats good u got it sorted but re the cat just because shes been living with one doesnt mean she mightnt be allergic. so keep an eye on that for down the road.
cat hair is one of thw main causes of allergic reactrions along with dust mites which we all have.

my ds started getting coughs and copious amounts of snot with his first tooth and it carried on for about four months getting worse (and often going to his chest) with every new tooth that popped out, it was over the winter though and there were two million cold/flu and virus bugs about this year!!!!!!!!! has she just started nursery or anything, ds picked alot up there...... teething nursery winter and weaning all happened at the same time so it was difficult to tell what was causeing what really.
