Come and talk to me about naps.

So I got yet another one of those Pampers magazines through the post this morning, and in it, it states that 12 week old babies should be napping for 2 to 3 hours at a time. I'm lucky if my dd goes more than 20mins!

Now I know every baby is different but after asking a couple of other mams in rl, they all tell me that theirs go for hours at a time. What about yours?

Ignore ignore ignore! Yet another book/leaflet to make you feel inadequate. While they may take the odd epic 3 hour nap, 20-40 minute naps are very common at that age.
Also, mums have been known to lie about how well their babies sleep.

Mine went through different phases - one of them was that she only napped 20 mins at a time too. She is now 10 months and usually has two naps a day but a couple of months ago she was having three naps a day - these can vary in duration depending on what we are doing - anything from 20 mins to 2.5 hours! I have always just gone with the flow and when she looks tired I've put her down for a nap - if she wakes up crying it's usually because she's not had enough sleep so I try and get her to go back down and if she wakes up smiley she's had enough nap time!

Haha well they probably lie to me - they know my baby sleeps through the night and has done since a week old! In fact the lack of daytime sleeping is probably the reason she does so well at night. I do realise I'm very lucky there.

And anyway, when she's asleep I miss her!

Somebody once said to me that you either have a baby who naps well, but doesn't sleep well over night, or a nightmare napper who sleeps well at night. Like you, I'd sooner have the former.

happydaze77 · 06/11/2013 21:58

Arrrghh - I meant the latter. Doh!

My ds is 18 weeks and only naps around 40 mins max maybe 4 times a day but at the moment goes 6.30-6amish at night. All babies are different just like adults. I have friends who's babies nap for hours during the day but wake up every few hours at night. I've learned to let my baby lead me and just accept him and not get stressed about what
Others are doing.

I have a reluctant napper too.

Oops posted to soon! Was going to say on the odd occasion he has a long nap he doesn't sleep as well at night. Think I prefer a quieter night though I struggle to get much done during the day when he's so awake!
