4 week old sleep/wake normality?

Dd is 4 weeks and is lovely. She is still jaundiced (she is breastfed) and we have a hospital appointment regarding this on Thursday.

She is gaining weight very well (birth weight 7lb 1, now 8lb 10). I know at the appointment the doctor will ask how alert she is and just wanted to check she is 'normal'.

She basically sleeps all day but wakes for feeds every 2-3 hours, feeds then back to sleep. She has an alert phase in either the morning or late afternoon, sometimes both. She sleeps at night waking once or twice and sometimes remains awake afterwards.

Does this sound ok or is she too sleepy?

She sounds perfect Smile

My DS had jaundice for quite a while after he was born, personally I'd wake her for a feed if its been longer than 2.5 hours in the day and 4 hours at night, just until this phase passes Smile

she sounds just like my four week old baby

And if you are in the uk, it might be worth talking to a BFC about bfing and jaundice before your appointment. Not all HCPs are informed on bfing.

Thank you both, that's good to know Thanks

Sorry x post JJJ!

I am in the uk, and I know that it's accepted in 'the community' that breastmilk jaundice can take 6-8 weeks to clear. However it seems that the nhs have a little panic from 21 days.

DS also had prolonged jaundice and had a heel prick test at about 3 weeks, which showed he was below any action level. Hopefully dd will be similar!

Oh good, glad you know what's going on. Hopefully she will be the same on Thursday.

Congratulations on your lovely new Lo too Thanks
