Just reassure me...heads and hard surfaces...

...because DS is crawling now, and pulling himself up everything...

so just reassure me that babies can cope with thunking their heads on floors, tables, doors and chairs on a regular and frequent basis.....because if they can't I either need to cover entire contents of house in bubble-wrap...or ds....

I am not an anxious mummy, pretty laid back and relaxed really, but just need a pat on the back to say - yup it's all ok...

Fairly sure they're OK unless they have a really huge thunk. DH bumped poor DS's head on the car door TWICE the other day and he's fine (DS that is!)

My 2 DS's are always banging their heads on something. It was particularly bad at the crawling, pulling up stage but it doesn't last long.
Before you know they are running all over the place and banging their knees etc They are tougher than they look!

Just make sure you have corner cushions on all sharp corners of furniture and put a fire guard all the way around the fireplace to stop them banging their heads off that. I somentimes used to put cushions over awkward areas to.

We have a hard marble floor in our family room and they cope fine with it.

Arnica cream is great for healing those bruises!!

my dd is at the pulling up stage and when she's had enough she just looses whatever shes holding onto and lets gravity do the work for her . Seriously though, she has had some really big bangs, she cries pretty briefly and then does it again. The house is as safe as possible without turning it into one big softplay ballpitt so what can we do ... i'm just praying she gats her balance and walks asap.

DS had his first bad bump at about 6 months when he leant forward from sitting and hit his head on the table.

My G was great - came out to see him and reassured me that babies heads are speciflaly designed with hard padding on the foreheads because they bump themselves so much!

he said that the one to watch out for were:
falling over backwards
A bump or cut
seeming dizzy or listless or throwing up after a fall.

The usual things of crawling, losing balance and bumping forehead, he said he'd be more worired if they didn't do it because then parents might not be encouraging htem to explore enough.

(oh and even when DS knocked himself out at 9 months after a fall he was absolutly fine afterwards! flirted with the nurses in casulty whilst I was a gibbering wreck!)

We were living in Singapore with marble floors when DS2 learned to walk - that boy had more bumps to the head than I could believe. Our terrace outside was really slippy when wet and both of them were always running outside after it had been raining.

Anyway, they are both fine, though I suspect DS2's skull may be a bit lumpy!

yep, ds can normally be distracted out of wailing by a set of keys to munch on or someone building a tower of something on the floor for him to knock over - so i suppose it doesn't hurt that much...it's just the frequency!

heads and hard surfaces are meant to meet - often. It promotes depth perception, spacial awareness, balance, co-ordination, appropriate manipulation of Mummy....

I could go on! I have managed to get 4 children through so far without a single broken bone between them - but all of them have spent their lives from about 9 months old covered in bruises from top to toe! Gravity is a force of nature that cannot be ignored!

We have stone floors throughout and ds has taken a few tumbles, mostly (and most comically) not by running and tripping, but by bending down to see something that's on the floor between his feet, and leaning just a little too far forwards....and slowly toppling over onto his head...ouch!!

We were told to check his eyes after a knock, make sure his pupils look the same as each other and react to light ok, also if it's a real corker to not let him go to sleep for at least an hour afterwards just to make sure there are no ill effects: dizziness, listlessness, vomiting, anything that makes you feel that something's amiss. tricky one this as most bumps for us happen near bedtime when he's tired!

Arnica is really good on bumps though, slap some on as soon as possible and it really does seem to stop it bruising so much.

think i will get some arnica, ds's head a bit multi-coloured (he nose-dived off the sofa this evening...he dropped his toy over the edge and off he went after it!)
