Eye exam for son?

TEErickOrTEEreat · 18/10/2013 17:41

The school has flagged up that they think my son might need specs, not surprising as I wasn't much older than him (4) when I got my first pair.

So can I just make an appointment somewhere, i.e. Vision Express, or do I need a referral from a GP or what?

I was actually at the GP with him today and forgot to ask!

Just take him along for an appointment with an Opthalmic Optician. He will be free as children are covered on the NHS.

But where?!?!

You can take a child to any opticians. You don't need a referral, although it would be useful to find out what the school think he is struggling with, in particular - boardwork, writing, colours etc.

Thank you!

Yes as happydaze said you can take him anywhere, just make an appointment.

Specsavers tend to be very good for kids glasses, & the NHS voucher will cover the entire cost of them. Kids love glasses nowadays Smile.

Thanks. Since all the sites say 'there's an NHS voucher for children's eye exams and glasses' I didn't know if that meant we had to be referred to get the voucher or what!

I will ring our optician this week.

Specsavers are brilliant with children! dd loves going. Their customer service is excellent. I was flying abroad and dd wanted her new glasses and they rushed them through.

Well, I use Vision Express for myself so I'll just take him there. They are always great with me. Smile

Any opticians will be fine, the glasses voucher is issued at the eye exam so don't worry about getting it. There are some lovely specs now for kids, not like my 80's horrors!Grin
