My DD is 6 mo, she has never been a great mapper, 10/15 minutes here or there and with a toddler too it's exhausting trying to entertain her all day. Now we're weaning things are getting worse because she's not finishing bottles and is now waking in the night too for a feed. If I share my day please can people point put any flaws they see and or share their own?

Ok, here goes!

Between. 6am & 7 - Wake, feed.
9-9.30 nap, in pram walking back from nursery run. (30 mins, best nap of the day.
10am bottle
12am luncH - solid, but literally half of one of those tiny little freezer tubs.
Attempt at nap - walking back to nursery and or in crib, dark room etc - 10 mins if am lucky!
5ish- milk hard been giving a solid but cut back because of not drinking milk and night waking.
6.30 bath bedtime routine inc a bottle

Thanks everyone x

Hi - our day is as follows (6.5 months):
5am-6am - wake up.
6.30am - bottle.
8am ish - 1 hour nap
10am - bottle
11am - food (about 10-15 baby spoonfuls.
I try to keep him awake until lunch
1pm - bottle
2pm ish - 1-1.5hour nap (messed up if naps before lunch)
4pm - bottle
6.30pm bath, then bottle and bed

From your post, it looks like your baby is having 4 bottles a day, with only solids between 10am and 5pm? Is that right? Maybe that's not enough - I don't think their milk is supposed to be reduced until around 8/9 months when THEY decide they are getting enough solids to reduce the milk. That's probably why she's waking in the night for a feed - solids at this stage should really just be about taste, texture and developing the technique of eating, not replacing milk or to fill them up.

My son started off weaning by guzzling down his solids, but I've now made the portion smaller, 1 hour after his bottle so he isn't actually hungry, just peckish and interested, and kept the milk intake the same.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I missed out a 2pm bottle, (stressed out baby on my knee!) from the original post. After this bottle I try again to get her to nap. So it looks like my day is similar to yours. Problem is she's not finishing a bottle, only taking about 5oz per feed now. I know that would make you think too much solid but she is also taking about 10/15 baby spoonfuls!

Thanks for posting! X

5oz is still a reasonable feed. Your 10am bottle maybe just do half a bottle or skip it entirely. This would make her more hungry for lunch. And she might take a bigger afternoon bottle which would set her up for overnight.

Hi, don't worry all babies are different my 1st was a nightmare for sleeping but this one is a dream she is 27 weeks and breast fed on demand (aka 24/7 )!
6.30 wake up
10am sleep 1hr
4 pm feed baby rice and carrot stick or apple to chew on
8pm sleep 3hrs
Feed when we go to bed at 11
Sleeps thru the night

gretagrape · 19/10/2013 08:23

Hmmm, thinking mine is just greedy then!

Maybe you could bring 'lunch' forward to 11 instead of 12, so she's not too hungry, then she might take more at 2pm.

I'm never sure if it's better for them to fill up on a big bottle before bed (which works for some) or try to spread it out through the day - my son has never responded differently to a bigger feed at night but he'll sleep better if each bottle during the day is emptied.

My day goes as follows with my 6 mo..

Wakes anytime between 7 and 8. 5oz milk at 8.30 followed by baby porridge, pureed fruit and then fruit pieces as finger food.
Nap 9.30-11.
5oz milk 11.30 followed by lunch.
Nap 1.30-2
5oz milk 3.45 followed by dinner.
Up to 7oz milk after bath at 6.30.
Bed for 7.
I think I'm quite (or very) lucky with my lo! As others have said, try to get another milk feed in somewhere. Some babies, like mine want milk then food straight after, other want food, then milk and others like a rest in between. You could try different ways??

iirc, at 6 months dd was doing

  • wake 6 ish
  • milk at 7
  • nap 9 ish for 30 mins
  • milk at 10.30
  • solids at 12 (just veg)
  • nap at 1pm - I always did this nap in the buggy, I would walk her round the block to get her to sleep, she would usually wake after half an hour but if I rocked her for 5 mins she would go back to sleep for another hour or more. Worth trying OP?
  • milk at 3
  • short nap at 4.30/5pm ish (buggy again)
  • bath at 6 then milk and bed at 7

and one or two milk feeds in the night too...
