Why has my 4yo DS started having nightmares every night?

He is a happy, easy going, funny, chatty little boy during the day and there have been no recent changes in his life.

He doesn't start school till next year (September born), he goes to school nursery every day and has loved it right from the start. He also goes to private nursery three times a week, he has done since he was a year old and they say that he is just the same as always - happy.

He has had the occasional nightmare in the past, as in he would wake up crying and be inconsolable for a few mins until he goes back to sleep. He has never given much of a description of his dreams just that "the leaves came out of the trees" but this is what he says if its a good dream or a bad dream.

This last week he has had a nightmare every night, waking about an hour and a half after going to bed screaming and dripping in sweat, it takes ages to settle him as he is shaking and sweating so badly.

The only thing that has changed is that I have stopped putting him in nappies at night, but he has insisted that he doesn't want a nappy or pull up pants and he is not waking because he has wet the bed.

There is only one thing that bothers him in the house and that is the plug monster - it used to live in the bath plug but it recently moved out (we got the plumbing fixed) - I don't think that this is causing his nightmares but I don't want to ask him in case I give him another scary idea.

DS1 didn't have nightmares like this. Any ideas as to what is going on?

Thanks

It could be "night terrors"? My DC had these, for no obvious reason.

I used to use a few lavender drops on their pillow to help them calm and go back to sleep.

Thanks, for the reply. He had another last night, exactly the same thing. I will try lavender, I was thinking of a night light although he has a gro clock that is quite bright.
