my 17 week old loves his bath and is a sweetie when it comes to our bedtime routine - except for one thing - when I put his vest on about 8 times out of ten he screams blue murder and is inconsolable until I pick him up. I've tried: making it into a game, making sure I've not made the poppers too hot on the radiator, doing it quickly, doing it slowly etc etc. He has no prob with his nappy, babygrow etc, just the vest and it seems to be something about getting his arms through the holes - any theories?

Don't put one on him? A t-shirt would do the same job, or put a little cardigan on him over his baby grow if you need him to have warmer arms, maybe. Don't know why though!

do u use the vest to secure the nappy? i did and still do. My dd used to hate it also, very stressful but she grew out of it, approx at 8 months old. It was the arms going thru the holes she didn't like. I just got on with it as fast as I could. I put her in the cot to put on the vest and turned on her mobile to distract her. This helped alot. Good luck!! it's horrible when theyb scream like that isn't it?

yes fimbles, I do use it to popper under the nappy - we use reusables and I find it helps keep them 'sealed'!!
could try cardi and no vest aloha, hadn't thought of that

will try the mobile in the meantime as he loves that normally and it can even distract him from that horrible 'you're leaving me in this cot in the dark aren't you' moment when his mouth turns down in that heartbreaking little arch and he gets ready to have his good night bawl

We invented a silly 'sleeve' song which kind of helped in the end.

We did the hokey cokey. You put your left arm in...no you really want to put it in...oh okay...you put your left arm out...you put your left arm in and you shake all about in a fearsome rage...

It got better once I could do the head and arms while he sat up. Not much though.

How do you get it over his head in the first place? Mine loathed the vest being dragged over, and if I did that they would fight the rest of the vest. I found that it helped if I gathered the vest up around the neck opening in a sort of ring, slipped the ring under the baby's head so their head was lying in the middle of the ring, then lifted the top of the ring right over on to their chest. That way the vest didn't touch the baby's face, and they didn't get as upset, if at all. HTH.
