16 month old hates taking coat and shoes off - why???

I have 2 DS. Eldest has no issue with this. Youngest hates removing his coat and shoes when we go anywhere and again when we get home.

It can be quite embarrassing when we're out as he really howls. I then stop and wait, let him settle and eventually he will remove the clothing with a small amount of protest. This is how it is at home and out.

Is there some underlying issue here? Does anyone know anything about this or can offer some advice? I have asked google but to no avail.

Thank you.

Because he's 16 months. Don't sweat it. All kids are different.

That is a good point. A friend of mine thought it was a bit strange and remembered reading something about it, that it showed anxiety or something. I am quite happy for it just to be a phase, or just one of those things.

It sounds like he is just independent and want to do things when he is ready not when you tell him. I don't have experience of it but I was a very stubborn child and that sounds like something I would have done Blush.

I'd say its just a phase my ds was just the same at that age Wink

I think most children have something like this at this age. For my DS1 is was a hatred of putting his coat and shoes on! DS2 hates everything I do for him so putting shoes on, taking shoes off, anything he sees as me 'restricting' him or taking away his freedom! He's 20 months and has been like this since he was born. I say don't worry. He's 16 months old. They're meant to be unreasonable!

My oldest ds kicked the lady in the shoe shop in the face when he was this age and she tried to take off one of his shoes without even asking Blush

Definitely sounds like it's just one those things. Thanks for the support.

DS1 threw a shoe at me in a shoe shop because I was trying to take off the brand new shoes - once on, they must stay on! It was very embarrassing but at least I knew he liked the shoes!

My 20 month old is the opposite and takes the bloody things off. And it has been a LONG phase. Highly embarrassing barefoot child when it is decidedly chilly. She can get any shoe off, it's awesome Angry
