5 year old with no school friends

DS2 is quite shy. He had a best friend at preschool but they are now going to different primary schools. They miss each other a lot, DS2 never formed any good attachments in reception class and its worse now he's started year 1. He is now in the main playground wandering around on his own, and DS1 is taking on a career type role which is in turn causing issues with his 8yo friends. I am worried about both of them.

Year 1 teacher is going to try and get DS2 involved in more group work. Any other thoughts? DS2 is sad and embarrassed. The school is good, but what else can we try before considering changing schools? DS2 also goes to out of school drama club but it hasn't really helped.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Can you try inviting over a couple of children one at a time for tea and a play? Sometimes that can help kick start some kind of friendship.

I'm pleased the teacher is going to try to help out too, also perhaps consider something like beavers?
