Can an 8 week old baby sleep too much?

I've just my 8 week check for my little girl - I mentioned to the doctor that she sleeps for around 6 to 8 hours a day and then around 8 hours at night. The doctor said that that was a lot for her age and I should force her to stay awake or else there's a risk that she will miss her developmental milestones.

My baby is smiling, gurgling and cooing and even starting to reach out for her toys.

So is the doctor talking gubbins? Any thoughts?

Enjoy it while it lasts! My DD was like this and woke up after a few weeks and started napping more normally.

Your baby won't meet milestones any better screaming with tiredness!

Sssshhhh... Mine too!

Dr is indeed talking crap. No such thing as too much sleep. Awake time is about an hour or so with two hours napping afterward in an ideal world. She also sounds like she is meeting milestones.

Sounds like your DD knows when nighttime is too. Enjoy.

Thanks all - it did sound a bit odd to me. I "play" with her whenever she is awake so not really sure what else I can do. She is a demon when overtired so didn't really fancy that option.

Not a stealth boast either by the way! I'm very aware that it could all change at any minute...
