how long would you say a 6 wk old baby would happily lie on the floor?

not long , if at all!

babies start playing with fingers at about three months, and at two are still working out focusing the eyes. short spells with something to look at a two months is ok.
However babies vary and will not be happy on the floor for very long at all.
Once they start exploring their bodies and gaining more muscle control, at three months onward would be a time for flat play. You can intoduce books for this time. baby board books propped up so that baby can learn to focus eyes and have something still to look at of varying colour.
hope this helps

thanks - ds is quite happy for 10 mins or so but any longer than that he starts to cry - just wondered what the norm was. Thanks
