What age do girls usually need to start using deodorant?

I was surprised to hear that my daughter (8 and a half) has a friend of the same age whose mum insists she use deodorant. I was surprised as I thought this was quite young....

What do you all think?

my dd is nearly 10 and doesnt need deodorant yet
