Which Formula milk to chose???

Hi, I've used in the passed SMA gold and Aptamil with my other 2 children but as I'm due my 3rd baby I don't want to use SMA gold!
I'm not sure if I should try Cow and Gate or using Aptamil again?

So if anybody has tried Cow and Gate Formula and Aptamil Formula milk which one they though was better or found no difference in them answers would be a grate help :)

Squiffie - that's not helpful. You've got no idea of the OP's background and why they're asking the question.

OP - they're all pretty much the same, until you get the specialist reflux or prem ones.

Choose one you can afford and you can buy in your local shop. Also one that come in ready made cartons locally is good too.

OP I used aptimil which was fine, and have also used cow & gate in the past. No problems with either.

Boobs don't always make milk. How's that for an idea?

We tried them all and settled on Hipp Organic.

I used aptamil because that's what the midwives provided in hospital so I just stuck with it, it is pretty expensive though. My boobs did not make milk no matter how much I tried.

Squiffie - it's attitudes like yours that give pro breast feeders a bad name, and put people off trying. You may be the definition of the breastapo.

OP asked a legitimate question. You have no idea why she doesn't want to breastfed. Don't judge.

OP - Aptamil and C&G are exactly the same. Look at the ingredients, nutrition and websites. Identical except for website branding colours. I work with a girl who used to work for Milupa (the manufacturer) who told me they come off the same production line. Many years ago, Aptamil was the first formula milk to have Omega 3 in, and was the best nutritiononally for a while. Then the other caught uo, but Aptamil has carried on being marketted as the superior product. But it is the same as C&G, just £2 a box more expensive.

We used Aptamil when we were in hospital then moved onto Hipp Organic once home. Agree with poster above to get what local shop sells, my local shop only did SMA and Hipp so I went with Hipp.

With regards to squiffie's post above my breasts could produce milk but as I take a lot of medication that would pass to baby through the milk I was advised not to.

Memphis my SIL has the same problem, so it pisses me off even more so when people judge without the pissing facts. I could not get either of my children to latch effectively and they were getting increasingly hungry, so what was I meant to do, let them starve??

That 2% figure that gets bandied around is so wrong. Maybe, just MAYBE only 2% of women are incapable of BF even with all the best help and support there is. Factor in the utter lack of help and support available to most ordinary women in the UK, and the number of women who never manage to successfully transfer milk from boob to baby is significantly higher.

And besides, whether or not you're physically unable to BF or not is actually no-one's business. Your boobs, your child, your choice.

I saw a 'which' article this week saying that there is fundamentally no difference at all between any of the formula milks. They are that strictly regulated that they have exactly the same ingredients and the only difference is the price and packaging. I know that for each brand there will be a thousand mums who come on and say 'my dc would only have....' And there'll also be a thousand who say '......didn't suit my dc'.

It's down to personal choice which one you use (if you do at all......)

I've mix fed both and had no issue with c&g. Cheaper than aptimal but babies didn't seem to notice any difference.

I used aptamil. It settled best with dd1 and she was very happy on it.

Dd2 had the aptamil pepti and again did really well on it. If I had a third I'd go with aptamil.

They are all pretty much the same but I did find that others didn't agree so well. Just see which your baby prefers. And of course choose one stocked at your nearest garage/convenience store

I'm a Breastfeeding peer supporter, but I get asked this too very frequently.

Have a look at the Caroline Walker Trust, it outlines an unbiased view on the different infant formulas.

I didn't swear, judge or name call I simply said 'boobs make milk' which is a fact.

The formula industry in the UK is self regulated - there's nothing specific or special about it. The only input the UK government have is that they banned any advertising of first milks - cue development and manafacture of 'follow on' milks - a 'necessity' only in the sense of the companies need to advertise.

The fact is one formula milk is pretty much the same as the next, its only aggressive marketing that makes the difference! Would this question even get asked if there was just one formula in a plain white tin given free of charge to those mothers who genuinely needed it?! No adverts, no pretty packaging just an acceptance that on the whole 'boobs make milk' and without all the crap spewed by the multi million pound industry that is 'formula' most of us would use our boobs to feed our babies!

Maybe so! Did it warrant the abuse though? There is far more abuse and/or negativity directed towards bf mothers than vice versa.

I probably did OP a favour anyway - it was almost half an hour from them posting to my reply...

It took 2 minutes from my comment for someone to bite back so now she has lots of info to be going at.

There's always someone that has to turn every milk feeding based thread into a ff vs bf debate. Squiffie, your first post had an unpleasant and sarcastic undertone to it, and criticises the OP when you have no idea of her reasons for not bf. Even if you did know it still wouldn't be any of your business.

That 'boobs make milk' is irrelevant to her question so you should probably not have bothered answering.

I guess you just pick one and try it. DD1 was fed on Aptamil because it was given to her in the hospital. I started dd2 on C&G but it made her really sick so switched to Aptamil and she was fine.

Why don't you want to use SMA?
