You're stupid daddy...

This is what my eldest, just three, came out with today. He didn't really seem to understand what it meant which is good, he said it in the same way, and just after saying 'I love you daddy'

We are very worried that someone at the nursery is calling him stupid? I can't think of any other way he could have learned the word?

Kids pick up words and/or phrases from anywhere - yourselves or other relatives, out shopping, tv, radio, at the playground and yes even nursery! Tbh, unless he lives in a bubble the rest of the time I wouldn't automatically assume he'd been called stupid at nursery. Even if nursery is where he's heard it I'd bank on it being from another child. If you're really that concerned go speak to them!

My 2 year old told my mum that her shopping bag was 'bloody heavy' shamefully I know where that one came from

Oh I dont think the nursery have called him stupid! Not for a second, I think it must be another child.

He will have learned all sorts of foul language from us, that you can be sure of but we would never call him/each other stupid.

I think i'll mention it to them this morning anyway.

I wouldn't worry too much if he has heard some child at nursery repeating something that he in his turn might have heard from an older sibling or from a child in the park.

As Squiffie said, he can't live his life in a bubble, you can't control absolutely everything he hears. As long as you don't think he is being picked on at nursery I'd leave it and not mention it.

Remember some of the other children at nursery will have older siblings and be involved in sibling squabbles as a natural part of life: it doesn't mean anything bad is going on or that they are not nice children.

If you go on to have another one, you will not be able to police exactly every word your older ds says in his presence, so you will almost certainly find that dc2 will be using more "adult" language at a younger age.

Using the word doesn't necessarily mean he's been called names, etc. It could just be that he's picked it up somewhere. Like others have said, you can't protect him from every word out there. No reason why you can't explain to him why he shouldn't say things like that to his daddy, etc though...

I think you should count your blessings that it was only the word "stupid." As a child, I proudly declared (at the top of my voice) that my little brother was a w@%ker out in our back garden. I was a couple of years older than your DS (definitely no older than 5/6) but my parents aren't ones for bad language and they had no idea where I'd picked it up. Goes without saying that I got a right bollocking telling off on that occasion!
