Day time naps

At what age did your toddler/little one drop their daytime naps? Mine turned 2 in April and still has a solid 2 hours every afternoon (any time between 12 and 3pm she drops off) but so many people tell me their 2 year olds don't nap at all!

No nap after about 9 months for any of our 4 (well, 3 of the 4, the other dropped naps at around 14months).. Or literally they'd be up until midnight!

Always amazed and jealous when I hear of toddlers who nap AND sleep at night Grin.

Kids are all different - if they need a nap, let them have it, if they don't need it, don't try to force them... And don't worry about what other people's kids are doing - that way madness lies Smile!

My dd is 2.4 she has been asleep now for 3 hours, I'm off to wake her. It's not everyday, but when they no longer need it they just don't do it.

Thanks.... I just wonder if I should be phasing her out of it... To be honest I think I need it more than she does! She's getting harder to put to bed but goes really cranky without a nap!

DS is 2.10 and still has a nap most days.

Today he hasn't had a nap as we have been out all day and by 4pm the tantrums started.

He is on the go from the moment he gets up in the morning so I think he needs the nap to recharge his batteries Grin

hettienne · 23/08/2013 20:59

DS has just turned 3 and I'd say he has a 2 hour nap 2-3 days a week still. He slept 2 hours every afternoon until his birthday.

DD is 2.5, sleeps between one and two hours every day. Like yours, sometimes she is very reluctant but once asleep sleeps soundly and no knock on effects of staying up late etc. Of the people i know whose kids have stopped napping, either the nap was reducing massively in length, or their kid suddenly won't go to bed. Or, they just don't need it any more, whereas my DD can skip a nap once every couple of weeks happily, but really needs to catch up over the next few days or the crankiness gets unbearable!

fififrog · 23/08/2013 21:03

I mean won't go to bed at night, sorry that was ambiguous. Though i suppose a point blank refusal to nap might do it too!

My youngest gave hers up just after she turned three, she would have two hours every day then it got shorter as time went on until she shouted downstairs to me one day "I'm not sleepy at all" then she shouted it the next day and the day after so I gave up!

Hi. DD stopped daytime naps when she was about 2yrs 9 months

crazykat · 24/08/2013 01:55

DC1&2 dropped theirs around 18 months. DC3 is a bit over 2 and a half and still has 1-1.5 hours most days but is slowly dropping them. She still sleeps at night and has since about 18 months. DC4 is 10 months and and is starting to drop down to 1 nap a day, could be due to older DCs being on holidays and not leaving him alone to sleep though.

GampyWabbit · 24/08/2013 02:12

dd3 turned 2 in May. She is beginning to drop her naps. She can go a couple of days without one and then needs a good, 2hr afternoon sleep. She has big siblinga who have been keeping her going over the summer hols.

We're currently on our way back from holiday, where she was up until 11pm most nights and sleeping in until 10am, with naps at around 5pm!! Shame it had to end and we will need to return to normality!

RoadToTuapeka · 24/08/2013 02:15

DS1 is 2yrs 8 months and still has an afternoon nap at about 130pm for an hour and a half or so. Sometimes he'd sleep longer but I find if I let him he wakes too early the next morning. Some days he resists a nap but sleeps solidly anyway after some quiet time. Days that he misses a nap (special occasion etc) he copes - but is a bit of a nightmare late afternoon, bit hyper, uncoordinated, won't eat properly and often takes ages to settle at bedtime.

So for now, I am in no hurry for him to drop the nap!

Tuapeka sounds just like DD!

Dc was 2.10 when he finally gave them up

sanam2010 · 25/08/2013 19:41

DD is 2.10 and we just cut the nap,
she seems to need it during the day but she was increasingly up till 9 or 10pm every day so now we won't let her sleep during the day and she finally goes to sleep at 7 or 8.

The first week was tough but it is going very well now. She's much happier during the mornings as well now.
