Tips for changing a pooey nappy when DS starts rolling over and crawling away...

....with his pooey bottom threatening to smear it all over the house?!

DS is nearly 9mo and has just started commando crawling. Changing his nappy now is a nightmare, and he will NOT stay on his back. Just rolls over and starts trying to crawl away if we are on the floor. Or rolls over and starts messing with all the creams and nicknacks on the dresser if we use the changing table.

he ends up smearing poo everywhere and I am at my wits end! Dreading having to change him out and about....not sure what will happen if he does this in the shopping centre's changing area :-S

Please someone tell me there's a foolproof way of getting your LO to stay still for a nappy change? It sounds funny, but I nearly lost my rag with DS earlier on the third poo change of the day :( Don't want to shout at hime but it's SO frustrating.

ps - I tried saying "No DS, we do NOT roll over when mummy is changing your nappy" in a stern voice, but he (a) obviously doesn't understand as he is 9mo and (b) he actually chuckled and then rolled over again! Obviously finds my stern voice amusing which bodes well for the toddler years

Have you tried giving him a toy to hold, or the packet of wipes? This works about 60% of the time with DS. For an extra 10% singing as well helps.

pack of baby wipes. My DD is 9.5 months and if I say 'wait' in a firm voice she will actually keep on her back. I do have to keep repeating it during the nappy change though...

I pin them down! One thigh over DS (and now dd) has been most effective!

Grab his ankles with one hand and keep them lifted in the air until you've completed the removal and cleansing phases of the operation.

Mine would stand still much longer than they would lie still at that age, so I changed them standing up (possibly next to a chair with a toy on it to distract them).
I haven't done a lying down nappy change since they could stand. And mine have medical issues so poo many times a day.

Thanks for the ideas ladies - I have indeed tried the 'help mummy by holding these wipes/nappy bags/this nappy etc etc but the novelty seems to have worn off now he can crawl away!

Might have to try the pinning to the floor with my thigh technique!

Unfortunately he cannot stand yet, but when he gets the hang of this in a few months i will give it a try

I sit on the floor with mat and baby between my legs and put a foot on each of their shoulders and do it quickly.

I sit on the floor too, but at right angles to the child, about at waist level.

put one leg firmly over their bodies, just above the waist - double bonus of them not being able to reach to fiddle about in pooey nappies!

all 3 of mine have been roll-and-crawl babies - looking forward to the end of it all now!

Distractions like iPhone or cbeebies and speed speed speed!

I used to do my dc standing as soon as he could stand up but he quickly got bored or that too and tried running away.

Another thing that really helped me was pull up pants put ds in them as soo as he started wriggling. So quick to get off and on

Between 8 and 16 months I just didn't change his nappy on the floor, only on the changing table as my DS did exactly the same.

Changing table (on top on chest of drawers) was completely different and he lay there quite happily as there was nowhere to go.

The thigh technique is the way forward! Especially combined with speed. I've never had to clean poo off the wall when DD wiped her bum on it, oh no

I used to lie them on the mat and put a foot on each shoulder. Worked pretty good.

Sit him on the toilet on a toddler seat and wash him down with water.did it with all of mine wince they could sit(around 5m)

Give him a different book or toy to hold each time so there's an element of novelty, if he's already bored with the wipes trick. Other than that hold ankles in the air through the whole operation, or pin him down (can't quite work out the thigh manoeuvre though!)

Those who've changed babies on their lap can't have had the wriggler I've got - she'd just have twisted and rolled on my lap smearing poo all over me! No idea how that one is an improvement

YY to a special thing to hold/play with, that they only get at nappy change time. My DD is always delighted to be given a hairbrush, for some reason! I always change on a change unit/cupboard top anyway, as doing it on the floor kills my back. So that might be worth doing, as other posters have said, as there's nowhere to crawl to.
