My DS is 26 months and is still not really talking beyond daddy, mummy, yes, no, oh, and animal noises. He understands everything I say: he'll go and fetch things I ask him for, will point to animals/vehicles in books etc. he babbles away and will point at things and say something, but words don't really come out. Should I ask for a referral? He was late crawling (11 months) and walking (20 months) so I feel maybe he's just a late developer. He does play brilliantly and can do 12 piece jigsaws but just won't talk!!

I would ask for a referral (or call and refer your self). These things can take months so get your self on the list. If he improves just cancel the appointment.
Early intervention is the key if he does turn out to have a language delay. It's great that he has such good understanding of language but he may just need a little bit of help to get his output to where it should be.
