DD not rolling at almost 6.5 months

I tend to be quite laid back about milestones as all babies are so different but my HV has me worried. DD is bright and alert and shows no problem with muscle tone but is yet to roll. She has chunky wee thighs and gets onto her side but then seems to get stuck and rolls back to the centre. I saw the HV last week who asked about rolling/sitting up unaided (which I would never try with DD as she would face plant!) & she said the not rolling element was very unusual & to keep her posted Hmm Should I be taking it more seriously than I have been? I just assumed her chubby legs were getting in the way and that she would manage sooner or later Shock

DD Disnt roll until she was 9 months or so. She could sit pretty early though and crawled when she was 10 months (may even have been the other way round - I don't remember). She walked on her first birthday.

I remember telling HVs she hadn't rolled and they just said - oh well she will when she's ready.

I'm sure it will all be ok.

Thanks. Glad am not being negligent. DS was crawling at 6.5 months and walking at 10 months so I can't really draw comparisons. She's just such a lovely, chunky wee pudding! I think without a nappy on she might crack it but am not willing to risk the carpet Grin

DD just started rolling at 6.5 months, I was starting to worry. She took to it really quickly, the first day she did it she rolled from back to front but could get back again. I thought I was going to have weeks of having to keep rolling her back. The next day she'd cracked it and there's been no stopping her since. If your DD can get on her side I bet it won't be long. DD still can't sit up, she face plants the floor after a few seconds or throws herself backwards. I guess they all do these things in there own time. Grin

They are all different - she will do it when ready.

Pleasenomorepeppa · 05/08/2013 23:36

DD2 is 6.5 months, she can sit unaided & rarely falls. When she does its a very graceful side fall & she rarely hurts herself.
She can't roll though & has no interest. She spends time on her front & back but just yells when she's had enough.
My niece, who is a month older can't sit for long without face planting but can roll all over the place!
I agree with exotic & becks that they all do everything when they're ready Grin.

Thanks everyone. I will continue to ignore the HV.

My DS didn't roll until 12mths! He is quite chubby too. He just wasn't interested. We would try and encourage him too but he would just moan. He hated being on his front too. He only started rolling when he turned 1 and its only in bed. He doesn't ever do it awake. He also didn't crawl until his 1st birthday either

My eldest didn't roll until 7.5 months then did that, crawl and cruise in about 2 wks. I was worried too. Needn't have been. My eldest doesn't do any of the developmental steps until he is ready and he can see an advantage. Which is fair enough!

Youngest was rolling at 2 months. Such a joy Hmm. I was then very grateful that the eldest had been so much slower Grin

Point being, different strokes for different folks.

my ds didn't roll except a few times by accident where he sort of fell sideways off a cushion!! HV told me that rolling isn't a milestone and some babies never roll, in the same way that some babies never crawl so crawling isn't a milestone either.

DS is now 3.3, he walked at 14 months which is bang on average and there is nothing wrong with him, obviously he can roll now but i don't think he did it till he was really mobile so i can't really remember when. He also didn't really sit until such a time as he could get up to sitting position himself. I think he could but it i sat him down he just used to get into a crawling position and was off. He started crawling around 8 months, commando style first.

SpanielFace · 11/08/2013 12:22

DS has only just started rolling at 11.5 months, at the same time as be has has started crawling! I don't think he could see the point before, he always hated being on his tummy & would just put his face down and cry. He was sitting from about 7 months and bum shuffling from 9 months. They are all different. I was also told that rolling is not a milestone, some babies never do it until much later.

Ifcatshadthumbs · 11/08/2013 12:24

DS was 8 months when he first rolled, he also crawled in the same week, so was obviously saving it up to show off! (Although he then left it another 7 months to walk)

Dd2 is another that showed no interest in rolling - and then at 11 months rolled, crawled and cruised in the same week Grin. She was 1 yesterday and can stand unaided but doesn't seem anywhere near ready to walk.

My (sensible Smile) HV said at her 8 month check that as long as she is able to move around in some form there's nothing to worry about - she asked me if when I laid her on her back on the floor and left the room whether she'd be in exactly the same place and position when I came back. She wouldn't be because she used to do this sort of caterpillar manoeuvre where she'd arch her back and push herself upwards.

daytoday · 11/08/2013 15:54

All 3 of mine rolled after they could crawl 11-13 months.

Thumbwitch · 11/08/2013 15:56

DS2 has only just mastered rolling, and he's just 10 mo! He also has very chunky thighs, and I think that kind of hindered him for a while - he was able to get from his side to his back or front, but not over from his back to his front. Until this last week. Things are a LOT more tricky with him now!

Thumbwitch · 11/08/2013 15:58

Oh and DS2 can't crawl yet, may not get it before he walks (DS1 didn't). He also hates tummytime and would roll off his tummy asap; and did the caterpillar manouevre on his back to get around (using his head as the pulling point)

Wow. Thanks. I hadn't checked back on this thread so lots of reassuring replies.
