Hello, my 21 month old has recently discovered he can climb out of his cot, so we have had to put the sides down. Since the sides have been down nighttime has become a nightmare :( He.just.won't.go.to.sleep. Even if he does go to sleep he will wake up and start playing with his toys. Last night we had to go in at 4 in the morning to tell him to go.to.sleep. This was after he finally went to bed at half ten, and then waking up at two :( He just can't believe his luck. He can get in and out of bed and have free reign over his room :(

Did anyone else have this problem? I've spoken to other mum's but they haven't. I don't know if this is because 21 months is quite young to have the sides down? But he is a big boy and is as tall as his three year old cousin :(

Any ideas on how I can get him to see it is night time and not playtime? He was fine when he was in his cot :(

Can you get rid of the toys? How long has he had the sides off?

Oh I feel your pain :(
I had the exact same problem with DS who was/is v tall for his age. I had to take ALL the toys out of his room and make it a boring but peaceful place to sleep. I got away with leaving his books and clothes in there but that's it.
To get him to understand that you want him to stay in bed try a sticker chart.my DS got a sticker for staying in bed at bedtime, another if he stayed in bed during the night and one more if he stayed in bed until 7am. At the same time I got him a gro-clock so he knew that when the stars were out he should be in bed.
It took a lot of consistent effort to hammer the message home but it DID work eventually! Now he's 3.5 and is really good about it all. We use the gro-clock every night but he started ignoring the sticker chart after a while. I had to reinstate it when he started playing up again when his sister was born (and we upped to reward to choc buttons!)
Good luck!
