Developmental Delays?

We have been referred via HV and Dr to see a specialist in developmental delays for DS

He is 9 months +
Doesnt sit ... Just throws himself back
Can only roll front to back

He can stand/bear weight if held in standing position.

He would be no where near crawling or pulling to stand though.

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of this?
What I should expect at his appointment?
Is it quite common?
Should I be worried?

Just cant shake the feeling that something isnt quite right.

I certainly wouldn't worry about the crawling, my DD (now 2) couldn't stand at 11 months but was walking very well at 13 months, she never really crawled. She also first started sitting at about 9 months, no one was worried about her so I would say he doesn't seem that far behind what my DD was to be honest. I personally really wouldn't worry about being referred, they will I guess try and help him along a bit but at that age it must be a case of simply keeping a close eye on him x

my friend's little girl who is 1 week older than my DD was pretty much the same as yours at that age, whereas mine was sitting, crawling and atempting to walk!! fast forward to 2.6 and friend's DD is way way ahead of my DD in a lot of things and has completely overtaken her!

its easy to say, but try not to worry, our little ones really do do things in their own sweet time. Its good that they are looking into it, as IF, and its a big if, there is a problem then its being dealt with very early on

Very common. I wouldn't worry too much but it's a good idea to keep your eye on things (which, of course you would do anyway).

Neither of mine sat very reliably at 9 months and neither of them could crawl or pull up to stand at that age either. DS1 went on to be absolutely fine and walked at 11 months (he only crawled about 3 weeks before he walked).

DS2 was diagnosed as being hypermobile at 12 months, which means his joints are a bit too loose so he's double jointed. He's fine though. He sat up at 10 months, crawled at 14 months. Yes it was 'late' but he's doing well and is just walking now at 19 months. He has had a few sessions of physiotherapy and some little support boots made to help him strengthen his legs.

What I'm trying to say is, it's probably nothing and everything is fine (like my DS1) or probably something that may need intervention (like DS2) but either way 9 months is far too early to worry and there's no reason to think anything is wrong from what you have written. Good luck x

Think I just have a feeling something is a little wrong.

If you have a feeling that something is wrong, then you're right to carry it through.

But on the list there's nothing that would shriek alarm bells to me.
Crawling is average about 9/10 months, but up to 15 months is still in normality-or even not at all. And they can go from looking nowhere near to crawling fast in a couple of days.

On the sitting, if he immediately throws himself back then he's not getting practice in. Dd2 didn't sit until gone 10 months and was wobbly even then. However she crawled at 5/6 months, so if you put her in a sitting position then she immediately threw (or tried) herself on her front to crawl off. Dd1 sat beautifully because she tried to sit iyswim.

Dd1 didn't roll at all until she was crawling and she realised getting onto her front was good-that was at 10 months.

if you hold both his hands does he pull to stand and stand like that? Don't worry if he doesn't, some do some don't. Doing it is positive though.
Does he show interest in things? Watch lights/wheels/fun toys
Does he pass from hand to hand?
Does he babble/respond to noises?
How is his eating? Does he eat solids okay? Feed himself toast etc?
If you drop something, does he look to see where it's gone? Apparently (according to my HV) looking to see where it's gone is a really good thing.

Before you go to the appointment, make a list of anything that concerns you at all and take it with you.

Try not to worry. My dd's gross motor development has been really delayed. She sat up at around 7 months so that was ok. But never rolled until she was 16 months (either way.) She began bum shuffling at 17 months then started crawling around 20 months. Pulled to stand around 23 months. She's now 27 months, still can't walk but is catching up fast. I think she'll be walking soon and her speech is coming on really well too.

She's had blood tests and an MRI, all clear. So I can't say there's definitely nothing wrong with your ds but some children really do take longer for no reason whatsoever, I was worried sick about my dd as every other baby was over taking her. But she's getting there!
