Hi there. My nearly 8 month old LB has just cut his first tooth. He's tired, snotty, coughing and off his milk completely. Is this all part and parcel of getting his teeth and should I just go with his lead?
Thank you xx

Teeth are horrible! As I recall the first couple were the worst, but each one causes grief. I spent hours each day with my DD alseep on my shoulder over her first few as it was the only way she stopped screaming. We had snotty, tired, sore bum/nappy rash, puke, temperature ...everything.

2 suggestions

  1. a product called AMBESOL. Get it from the pharmacy. It comes in 2 forms - get the LIQUID (not the gel it is no better than bonjella etc which we found didn't touch anything). You can test it on yourself if u like (many adults, inc me now, use it on minor tooth ache). We found this to be a god send. It was suggested to me by DD's nursery. This took away alot of the pain so settled her immensely - you just tip the bottle onto your finger and rub around gums.
  1. Paracetamol (calpol or whatever). Used particularly at night when she'd had a bad day of it gave her a decent nights sleep and made everyone feel better. I did speak to the doc about it at one point and she said provided I didn't overdose her there was no issue with using it sometimes (even when she didn't have a temperature). On the few overnight bad doses we had I used ibuprofen to get the temperature down - alternating with paracetamol if I needed to.

At 8 months I am assuing he is not soley dependant on milk for food - so don't worry about it. Try cold water that can be quite soothing. My DD ate a lot of yoghurt - but she was into her yoghurts!! Again doc will tell you they can survive without eating much for a few days - and will catch up when they are hungry (and between teeth!)

Most of all - GOOD LUCK - a painful experience I remember well. Wine

Thank you. I will certainly get some ambesol tomorrow. Unfortunately he is only on milk. He had lryingitis 2 months ago and was very sick on everything and since then he will not eat anything. He's on prescription milk for a cow milk protein intolerance so yogurts are out the question at the mo. he's a good boy and a good weight, 8lb born and a good 18lb now so he certainly isn't starving. Feel so sorry for him, just woke up crying with a really husky chesty cough bless him. Hope this passes soon. 🍺🍷🍷

Carly, ahh yes I did wonder when I wrote that - DD didn't wean till 8months plus due to reflux etc. (We also did prescription milks!) Have you tried giving him stuff like celery, peeled apple and carrot sticks? Might help the teeth, esp if its cold - and gives him something to taste - even if he only sucks on it and plays with it.

My DD hated baby rice or any kind of 'slop' and still now (at almost 4) only eats yoghurts without any fruit lumps in them and won't touch rice pudding! a texture thing I guess. She weaned almost straight to solid food as the soft stuff just bugged her. Doc said it was ok as she was older. Anyway I'm sure he'll wean when hes ready and you didn't ask for advice on that.

Hope the cough settles down - if it doesn't get him checked out - poor love could have a chest infection as well as teeth problems. One thing I do remember is that whatever he gets with the first tooth he'll likely repeat with the next few so bewarned!!

Hope the Ambesol works for you!!

Me too. Thanks. Last night was bad, his little cough is making him sick, he's very flemmy. Hoping its only teeth related as he's just had his check up with the doctor a week ago after his lryingitis. Thanks for all the advice. It's much appreciated and needed. He has the odd bowl of purée, but its a hit and miss if he will keep it down lol, but I keep trying a little each day to remind him it's there. xx
