Immature speech

We've just had my son's school report home and his teacher has noted that he has immature speech and good vocabulary.

DS is 5 in August, he was late starting to speak and didn't really start to all until he was nearly 3. He does mumble at times and if he is telling you something it might be two events mixed together.

He is also left handed, his writing is bad. I bought him a stabilio left handed pen, he then wrote his name mirror image.

We ae trying to encourage him to speak clearly but his is still a mumbled !

Any ideas what we can do to help him ?

get him referred for SALT assessment, either through school or gp, whichever is quicker. Also get him referred for OT assessment as both speech and writing issues can signal processing disorders and developmental delay disorders. Also get his hearing checked.

Sounds loads but do it now and you will get a much clearer idea of what is behind these things.

If you can afford it go private and have him assessed by a neurophysiotherapist. PM for details.

DS was just the same. turns out to be dyspraxic, has word finding issues, and low muscle tone contributed to poor speech.

I was in despair when ds was five!

now a thriving 13 year old. still has issues, but it is all managed well. Oh, also worth checking whether he has retained neo-natal reflexes. A neurology assessment is good too!
