My 5 month old has always had a patch of dark hair just above her bottom, what is it and will it go?

My dd has a hairy patch and a mole at the base of her spine. An X-ray revealed a gap in her spine known as spina bifida occulta. I was alarmed at first but apparently it's quite common and shouldn't cause any problems for her.

What made you have it x rayed ?

My dd's gross motor skills have been delayed. I was referred to a paediatrician when she was 15 months. I mentioned the mole and hair but paed wasn't too concerned.
We went back at 18 months and again I mentioned the mole and that I felt it needed investigating. She agreed to an
X-ray. The x-ray showed the gap. If was then advised that she had an MRI to make sure her spinal cord wasn't tethered (possibly restricting her movement.) But everything was as it should be.
She's progressing quite rapidly now and it would seem her late development and the mole/hair are not connected.
We were told that many people have a gap but never know as it causes no problems.
Nothing was ever detected on my scans either!
