Help - extreme shyness in 6yo DS

DS has always been quite shy in big group situations - standing up in front of everyone at school nativity play, for instance, looked terrified, couldn't say his line, had to come off stage in tears (was awful - was in tears for him)... but was much better at Easter assembly.

He has loved football for the last year and plays for a local team and after-school club,. Today he said he doesn't like footy any more and doesn't want to play - I eventually worked out that he's afraid of sports day, which is coming up, and doesn't want to do it, so he thinks that if he doesn't do any sports he'll get out of sports day!

He doesn't like people looking at him. He's worried about it. What can I do to help him get over this? The thing is, he's very sporty and is a very fast runner, fab at football so it's not as if he's worried people are going to look at him and laugh because he can't do it.

How can I improve his confidence and make him happier about situations like these? Help....

Could you ask his football coach for feedback to give to him, about how well he comes across?

Also, have a chat to his teacher to see if he could do group activities - do they still do 3 legged / wheelbarrow races where you participate with others?
