9 months and throwing himself backwards!

Hi Mumsnetters

Just wanted a little advice or to see if others have experienced this and that's it's normal!

My day is 9.5 months and had beef sitting unaided for ages, he's usually quite happy sitting playing with his toys. He's not crawling, hates being on his stomach, he's quite steady on his feet with support. He's recently whenever I put him to sit he flings himself backwards, my gut is that he is getting frustrating about not moving and wants to stand/walk! Efforts to help him crawl haven't got very far! Is this normal, is there anything I can do to help him move more?

Thanks in advance!

Totally normal, OP!

Your gut instinct is right, IME. He probably is frustrated by his limited motor skills and throwing himself backwards is his way of saying 'FFS! Why can't I move the way I want to?'

My dd2 is 13mo and does the same, usually now because I lie her down to change her nappy. She has clonked her head very hard, cried, and I try and anticipate now when she'll do it so I can have my hand there, ready to catch her head.

My dd1 did it too. She three herself backwards into a wall that the sofa was against when she was about 18mo and never did it again (I guess the action/consequence made sense to her at that age).

With your DS, just help him in his mobility attempts. Don't try to 'make' him crawl; some babies don't and that's just fine. When you need to sit/lie him down, just talk to him softly as you do it, e.g 'Mummy needs to lie you down now. Just going to change your nappy (shh) (shh) There, there, it's okay. We'll have you up again in a minute!'

And put pillows around him Wink

Dd does this, but sat in her pram or car seat! She kind I'd army crawls, and has started to pull herself up now, but once you put her in her car seat or pram she brings her head up as far as possible and throws it back, hard. She likes doing it against me too if she's on my lap Hmm she is the same age btw. I found pillows definitely helped when she's done it on the floor a few times!
