How can you give a 3yr old a tablet??

My friend has a 3yr old adopted DS. He has epilepsy and is on daily medication (tablet).

she is finding it really difficult to get him to take these tablets. she has tried crushing them into food, sweets chocolate. He has radar tho and knows exactly where thetablet is and will avoid it at all costs. the medication does come in a syrup format but unfortunatley until all his records have been transfered to his new doctor they will not prescribe this form of the medicine.

Any cunning plans???

I used to take these HUGE tablets and in the end had to crush them into a very fine powder with a pestle and mortar and mix with orange juice, didnt taste it at all. Can it be done withought his knowledge say the night before and put into a cup for the fridge ?? Tell me if thats a barking idea

how stupid of the doctors not to prescribe a syrup until records come through!!! My cunning plan would be to camp out at the surgery being a right pain, until they gave the syrup! If she can't get the tablet down him I suggest she goes down to the surgery on an emergency basis and gets them to suggest how to do it, and doesn't leave until she gets a more sensible answer from them!

Re. mixing with food: might be worth crushing them into powder and mixing the powder into Petit Filous. The flavour is strong enough to mask most medicines.

Thanks sooo much for all yr answers, my reaction was v similar too yours, I am the type who will camp out at the doctors or A+E with the bottle in my hand and say you show me how to give this boy a tablet without him being sick. I just wanted to check that there wasnt any other sneaky method i hadnt thought of (possibly a catapult!!)

The doctor has two choices,prescribe the syrup or the child becomes unstable!
What differance does the format of the medication make to the doctor fgs?
T**t!Being difficult for the sake of it as far as I can see,this child is entitled to a medication he can take.Do you know,this is making me so cross.

i mix them (crushed) into a yogurt.
the yogurt is so thick that it masks any small lumps and if you get flaovoured ones it will over the tatse of the pill.

the only trouble came when DS cught me one day and then decided to only eat yogurt if he was allowed to remove the film.....do you know how ard it is to re seal a yogurt put!

the initiative of us mums is outstandind, beast sodding Blue petere any day.
but i agree i woudl push the Doc for the syrup

like the yoghurt idea fattiemumma, will tell her to try that one if she hasnt already. Think the tablet form is quite bitter tho and thats how he knows its there and as soon as he tastes it its spat out. Dont blame him.
Am going to her house tonight to see how shes getting on. Hes only been there since tues after quite a long introduction,(over a couple of weeks)
