Maintaining discipline when ill....

aarrgghhhh

dd (3.8) has a vile cold and is the grumpiest most miserable creature imaginable with me and dh (fine with everyone else Angry

Yesterday morning and evening we had SO many tears, she took offence at everything we said or did and kept saying "I'm NOT your friend" adn "go away" and just being vile

Now normally I wouldn't tolerate this but I do feel I should cut her some slack when she's ill. I have tried being patient, loving, understanding etc but she is getting worse and worse.

Should I just leave it? It is impossible to reason with her, she bursts into tears at the drop of a hat so any suggestion of naughty steps etc will probably be full scale meltdown....

DD is 3.4 and behaves like this when she's not well. I just cut her a lot of slack. I know that I'm horrible when I'm ill, too.

she was awake all night last night wailing and whinging and eventually dh took her downstairs to sleep on the sofabed

I am not very patient when they are ill so I find trying to be calm and discipline way too hard with steam coming out of my ears and red mist descending tbh

I don't do the naughty step tbh, dd1 sobs so much and gets really worked up. We have a Thinking Chair in the corner so she can sit out for a bit (and I can give the Evil Eye!).

Idea pinched from playgroup and it seems to work.

Don't try to be patient or understanding. Just dose her up with Calpol, and stick the video on.....

I'm only half joking. I find that when dd is ill, I don't try to reason with her at all. Not worth it.

Yes I have kind of come to that conclusion.

Last night she sobbed for 15 mins about something I had allegedly said to her (in fact I had shouted from the top of the house "I'm in my bedroom", she screamed "don't say that to me" and for the next 10 mins it was "but all I said was I'm in my bedroom, Daddy heard didn't you Daddy" .... "WAAAAHHHHH I HATE YOU YOU'RE NOT MY FRIEND YOU MUSTN'T SAY THINGS LIKE THAT TO ME" repeat ad nauseum!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

A nice warm bubbly bath tends to calm my DD when she is poorly and grumpy.

Yep, sounds about right for a sick child. Logic leaves their bodies when germs invade. If it was my dd, she'd be upset about the fact that I'd shouted....not that it was perfectly reasonable to do so because I was far away...good luck, and keep posting whenever you need to vent. You're in the sickness twilight zone!

Funny thing is she isn't that ill even! Just a runny nose. She is still at nursery and is fine there!

If it makes you feel any better mins stomped through WHSmith on Saturday shook her finger at me and shouted "You're pissin' me off!" Blush

I said "shhhh" and she repeated herself.

mine told me, at 3am this morning, that she didn't want me, she wanted daddy and I was stinky.

I think she may have been called a little shit as I stomped out Blush

but it was 3am

well it's going even worse tonight

she is vile

I have now shouted at her and stomped out of her room Angry Sad

She is shouting mama and screaming and crying outside the study door and I have JUST HAD ENOUGH

Poor you Countess!!Do you have a HUGE glass of wine in your hand?Im sure tomorrow will be better and if it isnt just think that it is one day nearer to her leaving home!(or getting better)Best get that drink eh?!

Yep, just leave it while shes poorly. I just try to give lots of cuddles and put my very caring voice on, ignoring her tantrums. My last resort to my ds 4yr is to threaten to kiss him to death, normally puts a smile on his face. Smile

Hi countessdracula,hope you got some peace last night and today is better than yesterday.Dont you just wonder why we do it somedays?...life before children was so much easier...only ourselves to think of...
But we wouldnt really be without them would we?Probably next week she will be an absolute angel and these few days will have vanished from memory!!:)
