Has anyone gone Cold Turkey to get rid of a dummy?

We are trying to get DD out of the habit of sleeping with one and wanting one in the car seat. She is 14 months and we have just put her to bed without it for the first time tonight.

She is having a cow.

Any ideas on how to get her through this. We have tried giving her a favorite toy and she is holding it but still screaming.......

yup - but we did it at Christmas ... the kids left their dummies for Santa to give to other kids who needed them .... ( didn't really think about the hygeine issue !!! )

But it worked .... But they were about 2 - and could be reasoned with ....

(No advice on the dummy thing but just read the thread title and now so want a cold turkey sandwich!)

i would wait til she's older tbh. Just restrict it to bed times only. She can't understand why she cannot have it yet.. ds gave his to santa also. worked a treat but he was nearly 3 and could see why

we gave DD1's dummy to the dummy fairy when she was 2.5. She sobbed for the first 2 nights but was fine after that.

We gradually cut down with DD1 leaving it just to sleeping and in the car although to be honest it was mostly because I was embarrassed! As she got older we stopped it in the car and eventually we also did the Santa thing at Christmas - she was 3! She's 6 now and by the way doesn't have any problems with her teeth.

But I'm worried that the longer I leave it, the harder it will be.

Still screaming but we are going in every 5 minutes to reassure. She has gone from sitting to lying down.......

Friend did cold turkey at 6 months - fine.

SIL did it with hers around their 3rd birthdays at Christmas for FC - again fine.

Hope it works.
