17 months twins not walking

Hi everyone im after some advise. My ID twins are Not walking yet.They were born ny elc 35+6 weighing nearly 6lb each.

Twin one is cruising the furniture sometimes uses a walker not very far but twin 2 will nnot even pull her self up just up to her knees.

My toddler who is 2 started walking at 18 months old so late aswell but she was walking holding my hand and making progress.

why are you worried?

have you spoken to a health visitor / gp / anyone about it

some children just dont walk until later...as they are both at around the same stage i wouldn't worry too much just be grateful that they can't run away yet, however if you are concerned get an appointment with a health visitor or gp

No I haven't spoken to anyine yet m I did with my toddler and there wernt concerned and made me out to be a over reactor. She walked at 18 months.

Twin 2 is alot behind twin 1 as she has veen cruising for a while. Twin 2 won't pull her self uo at all.

do they crawl? if they can get around in other ways they just might not have the drive to walk yet if you hold them under their arms will they attempt to straighten their legs to hold theit weight??

why are you worried?

DTs walked at 18 months (31 weekers), their friends the same age but 37 weekers didn't walk until 20 months. No cause for concern with either sets. If they can bear weight I wouldn't worry yet, and try not to compare with your singleton, they're all different!

I was worried as they say 18 months they should be walking?
Twin 2 I will hold her under her arms and she will just fold :) she wint stand at all. Wont have any of it.

I personally would ask about the lack of weightbearing for DT2. I know they are all different (my DS1 walked at 11 months, DS2 is 16 months and still only at the crawling and pulling up stage) but I do think by 17 months it might be worth mentioning it to Health Visitors or GP. The twin who is weight bearing and cruising I wouldn't be at all concerned about. I wouldn't expect a 17 month old to be walking necessarily.

My DS2 has slightly hypermobile knees (double jointed) and that is the main reason he isn't walking yet but he is able to stand and pull up now but he has physiotherapy once a week to help with strenghthening the muscles. He doesn't really do anything but cling to me during these sessions but I video him throughout the week and talk to her about his progress and she gives me print outs of what excercises to try with him and the best ways to encourage him. It has helped his strength and he is now begining to cruise round furniture. Really good progress considering we've only just had our 5th session. At his first appointment he was only just commando crawling, couldn't crawl on all fours, couldn't pull up to stand, prefered to just lay and roll about. He's like a different baby now so it's often worth getting referred if you are worried because it can often just be a simple case of knowing how to encourage them to use their muscles proplerly.

My DT2 walked at 19 months and refused to weight bear for a long time. He is seven years old now and having OT and Physio for his hypermobility. His twin was also a late-ish walker (16 months) and has hypermobility too but it presents no problems at all for her.

My youngest DS didn't walk until 20 months but he is much more sure-footed than DS1 was.

I wouldn't worry too much.

Hi. My son didn't walk until he was 19 months. I was getting to the point of speaking to the doctor as he seemed nowhere near walking. One day I left him at my mums and when I came back to collect him after my work he was walking all over the house like he had been doing it for months. I seriously couldn't believe it! He was very steady and rarely fell over. He's now 4 and no problems with mobility.

Thank you all very much. Twin 2 us concerning me ill call hv Tom just to rule out what was said above.

My dd was exactly same had no confidence but was cruising then she was off. Fingers crossed all will be ok.

My DS wasn't weight bearing at 18 months and would scream blue murder if you put him in a walker etc. We did get him checked by a HV who pronounced him lazy. He is a very accomplished bum shuffler and actually gets around quicker than friends children who are walking.

Now at 21 months we have signs of walking, he can now stand up by himself and cruises around (albeit unsteadily) and walkers holding onto one hand. I am hopefull he will walk before he is 2. If was a shock as his sister was running like a mental thing at 14 months. Try not to worry too much, they all get there in their own time. As my husband always says, you don't see any kids crawling into pre-school!

(Sorry for hijacking) Hersetta, we were on the August 2007 post natal thread (I was mandmyjoe). How is DD? Can't believe they are 5 now!! I agree it comes as a shock when DC2 isn't walking When DC1 did. DS1 was running before his first birthday. DS2 is 16 months and no where near.

OP was also wondering what age they crawled? Can the sit up from laying down?

Hiya... nice to hear from you and congrats of the new addition ! DD is brilliant - a real charachter and still besotted with her brother (she says he's the best baby in the world!). DS only starting being able to sit up about a month ago, so he has ,ade some real progress and apart from the walking he is doing well - really chatty, loves singing and peppa pig in equal quantities. I have pic of them on my profile if you want a peek). Sorry hijack over!

Yes can sit up from lying down. Theu sat up unaided with jo pillows about 10 months. Started crawling right afer although twin 2 is always a few months behind twin 1.

Hersetta Your DD looks so grown up. They are both beautiful children. DS looks a cheeky chap! I think I have made my profile visable to people now (not sure if I've done it right!) but you are welcome to have a nosey. Can not believe how fast it's gone since we were discussing our then babies! DS1 is lovely. Such a gentle, funny little boy. So lovely to hear from you and hear DD adores her brother.

OP it is good that they can sit up from laying down. I got told by our physiotherapist that it's a good sign and good for strengthening core and developing balance. Twins often walk after singletons. Like I said there is a huge range of what's 'normal' but I would definitely mention it to GP about the weightbearing. Good luck. I am pretty sure they'll be up and running soon but I do know how worrying it can be to see other children who seem miles ahead.

Lady when my dd failed 8 month check for not sitting unaided was when we were referred to paediatrician. I think they would refer you if you ask. But please dont worry.

I have a 17 month old (born at 35 weeks) who isn't walking yet, and only started to pull up and cruise about 6 weeks ago. She didn't crawl until quite late (13 months) and was slow to weight bear. As others have said, it's the weight bearing issue that tends to concern health professionals but definitely worth getting it checked out. Our little girl was referred to a specialist because the HV thought she might have hip problems. Specialist declared she was just lazy, and it's perfectly normal for babies to take up until age 2 to walk. Age of walking also tend to have no bearing on future development.

Thank you. A few weeks back I stood her up against the wall and she stood leaningup against it but won't do it anynoranymore. She seams adamant she doesn't want to stand at all anymore.

Age of walking also tend to have no bearing on future development.

It depends on the reason for the delay. Once OP has seen a paediatrician she will know. It could be any number of things - balance, hypotonia, hips, or just laziness, but only a paediatrician will know this.

Definitely worth getting a referral (for your own peace of mind as much as anything else).

On my other point re longer term develooment, some interesting research has just been published on age of walking. Basically, the study followed 200 children who walked between 9 months and 20 months and found that in the long term it made no difference when the child walked. It's also worth having a look at family history as late walking can be inherited - DH a late walker in my case.
