giving up dummy

ds wi be 4 on Sunday, he only has his dummy at bed time. But since he gave up it during the day at 3 we have been talking about to giving it up completely at 4. He knows that he will get a lovely present from the dummy fairy (book he really wants and a trip on Thomas the tank engine) hes been broken hearted all week about giving it up,and now im worried he won't sleep without it

Sorry can't offer any help, in the same position myself but 1 year behind (dd 3 next month), so watching replies with interest!

The dummy fairy worked brilliantly for my ds when he was 3.10; we put the dummy in a bag on the landing so it was out of sight and although he did cry a bit, he did settle more easily than I expected. I also left a card from the dummy fairy thanking him.

For a few nights he did get upset wanting his dummy, so the fairy sent him another card with a letter from "jakes mummy" thanking him so much for leaving his dummy out for the fairy - they couldn't afford a dummy for jake and he cried all the time, the fairy had passed on ds's dummy and now he was all settled and happy - the dummy fairy also left him £2 for a comic; that second letter really did the trick and he stopped mentioning it.

I will carry on with the dummy fairy, and the gifts and let you know how we get on. Dreading bedtime on Sunday though

Make a big show of it all and build up the excitement of the dummy fairy coming like you would with Santa. We ceremoniously laid out ds1's dummies in a dish in the living room, and ds1 was so excited about going to bed that night and waiting for the "dd" fairy to come. I wrapped his present (Wall-e toys that he wanted) and left it in the same spot, and in the morning he leaped out of bed with a "has she come yet? has she been?!" We had 2 nights after that where he was a little sad at bedtime but did go to sleep, and was pacified by having his Wall-e toys watch over him from his bedside table. Your treats sound good but if you don't mind spending a little extra, something animate that you can pretend to make talk and can either be taken to bed with him or sit on his bedside table and watch him sleep, might help him feel less sad. That made a big difference with ds1.
