How tall is your 2 year old?

DD is 91cm tall (almost 36 inches)
She weighs 15kg. Turned 2 last week.
Everyone she meets comments on her size. She was born 10.4 pound (4.6kg) and has always been in 98th centile.
DH and i are both tall (i'm 5'11 he is 6'2)
I am starting to get really pissed off with people making a big deal of her height. I know they mean it in a 'wow she'll be a supermodel' way but I just feel it is rude to and I worry about her feeling different. I don't go around commenting on how short other people's kids are because i think it has sod all to do with them as a person.

My 3 year old is tiny. My 2 year old brother is has tall as him and also weighs more. The toddler wears size 1 1/2 to 2 years trousers as 2-3 are massive. People comment on his size and mention how riny he is all the time

Its obvious he is short. I'm no giant at 4 foot 11.5. Though my mum gets annoyed at people commenting on my brothers size. He is a beast of child tbh and no one believes his age

It's mainly my cleaner who comes once a week and says 'oh my she's grown AGAIN' if she grew half as much as she said she did she would be the size of a bloody basketball player by now. I just have to fake grin and say 'yeah...yeah... Grown again...that's what they do '
Or total strangers who when I say she just turned two they raise their eyebrows and say 'really? Wow she's tall...'
Really? No... I made it up. And telling me she's tall... What a revelation! All this time i was unaware because no one had ever had the insight to make such a bloody obvious observation.

People just use it as a way of making conversation. Over the years mine have had comments about their height (two were tall and one was tiny), their hair, and even their eyes.

Unfortunately they don't realise that they are probably the third person that day to have made the same comment.

The annoying bit comes when you're somewhere that's free for under-5s and the person letting you in/on refuses to believe that your child is only 2 or 3yrs old. It's very difficult to prove that they're younger than they look!

My 3.4 year ols is the exact weight and height as your 2 year old but does have growth problems, on the centiles she is 9th for height and 50th for weight so I assume your 2 year old is chunky-ish too.

I get the same, but the other way around! For what it's worth I have seen many kids grow up and at different rates, small kids suddenly become tall and tall kids stop growing!

Our DD is 2.3yrs, 96 cms and 16.5kgs! I'm sure some people wonder why she's not at school and can't speak properly yet when we're out in the day...
Hope she becomes a supermodel and I can out my feet up.

DS is 27 months and 84cms. I think he's quite short but haven't bothered to check in the red book but I'm short and DP is average.

Resipsa- yes it's hard when people have high expectations. People have been asking DD what her name is since she was 12 months- expecting an answer... When she doesn't they say 'oh is she shy?'... Nope... Just can't talk yet!! Lol
Yoni I like the t-shirt idea! Lol you might want to patent that!
Pseudo - according to statistics i think 85cm is average for a 2 y/o.

My DS was almost exactly the same height and weight as your DD at 2 and was always in the 98th centile.
His growth and weight gained slowed when he got to about 2 1/2. He is now 3 1/2 and people still comment on his size as in general, other kids the same size are about a year older.

DD (2.4) is 95cms...not sure of her weight to be honest, she looks healthy and ok so i never bother weighing her

i thought she was about average, a lot of 2-2.5yr olds at the playgroup we go to are pretty much the same height as well....tell your cleaner to sod off, children grow its what they do, you don't need a running commentary every week lol xx

I don't think there is anyway it will make her feel different. As copper says I think it's just people making conversation.

I have no idea how tall DD is at 2.4yrs old or how much she weighs - all I know is she's happy, lively and thriving. I have a colleague that has a disabled daughter of the same age, I know he would love it if people commented on her height or her ability to walk and talk and not to look at the feeding tube she has to have.

We had 5 cycles of IVF to have her and feel so lucky and grateful that I treasure every comment that anyone makes about her - the other day it was 'you've got your work cut out there!'

I really suggest you try not to worry and stress or get pissed off about other people's comments it will happen constantly with a kids and that's just life.. heights at 2 aren't reflective of how tall a child will be and at this age it's constantly changing.

Happy- my daughter is THE most beautiful, happy, intelligent, healthy, thriving and adored little girl in the world (to her parents)... We didn't have to go through IVF but knowing the pain of losing a child I can tell you whole heartedly we are grateful for every moment she has given us...however, being her adoring parents I am hard wired to be sensitive to other people's remarks about her that may leave her feeling different in any way. She is destined to be tall- she will always have remarks...
This was a bit of a light hearted rant..a way to vent...and also an attempt to establish if she really is so different- and if so, enable people to realise that perhaps if they do say things like this, it's not always perceived as a compliment.

So sorry chatty, I probably came over a bit overzealous, it wasn't my intention. I guess we are all hard-wired to be sensitive as you rightly say and I didn't express myself well. I certainly didn't intend to upset and I am sorry for your loss.

I don't personally believe it's all mapped out and destiny, I'm sure someone who know's more about these genetics and height etc will be able to tell her. 6ft 2in isn't hugely tall for a bloke, I think average is around 5ft 9in and whilst yes, 5' 11 is above average for a woman it's not uncommon across Europe.

There are many things that kids stand out for and I agree with you wholeheartedly it isn't nice to be the kid that's always 'different' But, I do believe you play a part in that - and perhaps if she sees you feeling pissed off when people comment then it will rub off on her..

Again, apologies I didn't mean to de-rail your light hearted vent. I'm curious now as to how tall my dd is now compared to her, I will go home and find tape tonight! she has also had similar comments and certainly my niece too is similar age has a particularly tall 6ft 5in father we wonder also how tall she will be..

I am with you Chatty. I am hard wired to be sensitive to other peoples remarks. He may feel different to most in that he's adopted so i can't help but bristle when he gets comments as i want him to have the choice about whether he is 'different' or not.

As DS is adopted. I was paranoid during the early months of placement that anyone would think he was 'failing to thrive' (rediculous i know!) so i measured his height and mark it on the door jamb (something my parents did when i was a child and i loved seeing whether i had grown. We have attached a seperate piece of wood so we can remove and replace it when we decorate). Thankfully he grew 1/3" a month, every month.

I was also tall all the way through school and bloody hated it although ironically, all my friends caught up to me at high school and I am now only average height. I am a bit miffed as i'd love to be tall now!

I do find it a little sad that I have to buy DD age 3-4 clothes (or bigger) when she's barely 2.
Actually, height at 2 is a good indicator of probable adult height. DD is destined to be 6 feet or so but that won't be so unusual when she's 18. The boys will love her

p.s. I have heard the height kids are when they turn 3 is half the height they will be as an adult. I know idea whether that's true or an old wifes tale though.

My 22 month ds is 98th centile for height and weight. Everyone thinks he's about 3 and I do have to get him clothes for aged 3 too. He too was a 10lb plus newborn so have had it from the word go.
People comment on it constantly, especially as he's still bf and looks like I'm feeding a preschooler when actually he's still really a baby!
To be honest I love it! Feel very proud to have produced and maintained such a beautiful, thriving, strapping boy. Imagine if people kept commenting because your little one was tiny and skinny / underweight ? It would be way worse!
You should pat yourself on the back that you've reared such a picture of health and ignore them! :)

I have the opposite-DD is 2.4 and about 78cm (not sure exactly, but under 80cm, anyway). She's still in 12-18 month old clothes.

People seem compelled to point out her tinyness to me, and have done since she was born, like I hadn't noticed. It's got worse since DS2 was born, as he's so big (91st centile, and, at 12 weeks is in clothes she was in at 11 months)

I worry that it will affect the way people treat her as she gets older. I don't want her treated as a fragile, delicate little flower when she's anything but.
