toddler not staying in bed...

My 23mo dd is now in her cot bed with side down but has a safety rail. she is much happier than in the cot. For the first week she stayed put but we now have a little face appearing in our bedroom up to 3x a night. There hasn't been much sleep all round. She will go back to bed if i give her a cuddle resettle her & stay with her for a bit. Last two nights she has ended up in with us as I am shattered working full time and 23 weeks pregnant. Any advice on what to do to encourage her to stay in bed? she has water, cuddly toy etc in her bed, full tummy good bedtime routine and goes down fine...it is just the waking and wandering we need to crack! Help gratefully received

We put a stairgate on dd's door. She stays in bed all night now :)

I posted about this exact thing about two weeks ago! Was advised to get a stairgate, we did (called it DS's magic gate! He loves it!) and now he stays put! Having said that right now he's by the gate calling me....sometimes he's a bit naughty about it. But at least I'm not worried about him getting out the room and hurting himself. Good luck!

YY to the stair gate. When we took the side off dd's cot we moved the gate from the top of the stairs to her door (we never let her go downstairs without us anyway so it wasn't achieving anything being there)

Now, almost a year later, she still hasn't tried to escape her room. She actually hasn't worked out she can leave her bed without one of us being in the room

I'm at the point, now she's 2.11, that I trust her not to wander in the night and/or try and drink toilet cleaner etc. but she freaks out if we leave the gate open!

We've got a stairgate on our sons door otherwise we'd be constantly taking him back to his room when he's meant to be sleeping. I had his cot and bed all set up in his bedroom,I then did the first week of just using the bed for naps when he was ridiculously tired -he was then too tired to kick up a fuss, meanwhile helping him get used to it. A week later he would climb into it of his own accord as we kept saying it was HIS big boy bed so I folded down his cot in front of him (he had travel cot) and it just stuck that he used his bed all the time. He was a year at the time -don't know whether this made it easier as he didn't start getting stubborn until about 18 months -would've been a nightmare trying it anytime after then, lol.

Argh....Last night she was up nearly every hour until 3:30am and the alarm went off at 6am for work. Zzzzzzz. Exhausted.

Can you put her back in cut and try the bed again in a few weeks? Dd1 is 2.10 and still in her cot. We ended up getting a Cheap second hand cot (and new mattress) to use for dd2 who is now 5mo. The time just didnt feel right to move dd1 to a bed.

Why do you think your dc was unhappy in her cot?

She goes to sleep and settles better at the beginning of the night with the side off....she was trying to climb out of the cot so think this might be safer too....
