Delayed Speech

Can anyone help? Today in mine and my sons 2 year three month check up the heath visitor took me to one side and said that she would like my son to be referred to a speech therapist. He certainly doesn't know all the words he is supposed to but he has got at least twenty and is slowly adding to that twenty as the months go by. He loves sharing a book and joining in conversations with us, even though most of it is babbling so it's not like we aren't trying for more speech.
I'm not sure whether to feel that there is a 'problem' here or whether it's just a boy thing?
Thoughts/ experiences would be most welcome please!

I would certainly take the HV up on what she is offering. My DD2 is significantly delayed in speech and considered 'at risk' in the therapists report. She has some developmental difficulties with speech due to glue ear and some other stuff and also probably speech disorder. I'm delighted we are not getting help as, with her age (3.2) she is starting to find socialising frustrating and other children are beginning to comment. My feeling is the sooner problems can be identified, the sooner help can be given.

obviously I am delighted we are now getting help - rather than 'not getting help... should have proof read! :)

The waiting list could be months long so no harm going on it now and declining later.
