DD won't poo in the loo!

Please help - our DD is 3.5 and refuses to poo in the loo. She holds in her poo all day even though she is bursting to go, and then poos in her pull-up during the night. She refuses point blank to do it in the loo and we have no idea what to do about it!!!!

Will she sit on the loo wearing a nappy? My dc1 had this issue and the hv suggested a gradual removal of the nappy from wearing the nappy on the toilet to sitting the nappy in the toilet.

My DD did this. We despaired, but did nothing. She decided she wanted to stop wearing nappies at night (3.4 years) and that was it. Poos in the loo every night before bed.

My friend's DD was the same. She just started all if her own accord too.

DS was the same too - we used to put a nappy on him when he asked to do a poo and then every few weeks we offered a big bribe for the toilet and one day it just worked.

The problem is she won't tell us when she needs a poo during the day. She clearly does need to judging by the very smelly farts and squirming but if we put her on the loo she will sit there for hours and refuse to do anything. We haven't tried to put her on the loo in a nappy but will in the hope that does something! The annoying thing is that when we first started potty training she did do a poo without meaning to but since then she has built it up in her mind to be a huge deal.

Does she sit with her feet dangling or propped up on a step? (The latter can help!)
We bribed my DD!

she normally has her feet on her stool. We try bribes every time and she still won't!

Is it because it splashes?
Mine was happier pooing in the loo when there was some tissue to break the fall. (the things we write sometimes....!)

We put a ping pong ball in the loo. Worked as target practise for weeing boys and also to see if the ball and the poo flushed away. Also DS used to say I am going to poo onthe ball, listen. ...... Nice.

Or take her into the loo when she starts squirming, put a nappy on her and let her stand by the loo and do a poo in the nappy, then take off nappy, and flush poo down the loo

We had to do this for a few weeks before DD would use the loo properly

But she got there in the end

Hi - just had to say my DD 3.5 is exactly the same. Wee's in potty / loo, but will only poo in pull up at night. She also did an early accidental one in the potty and seemed very proud, but for some reason has refused ever since. We have done 'poo goes to pooland' which she loved - but didn't work for her. No ideas - good to hear that other people's DC have just grown out of it though.

I'm so glad ive read this thread! Just started potty training with ds 2.10, going reasonably well for weeing. Poohing on the other end is a nightmare!!! He has always liked to hide when poohing and often doesn't go for 3 or 4 days. He has had a complete meltdown about poohing on either the toilet or potty and eventually just went in his pants. I've been unsure whether to resort back to a nappy for poohing. Just don't want to put him off the toilet!!!

My dd1 was exactly the same. I've heard of many many girls who have problems pooing in the loo. We took her out of pull ups and told her she had to go in the toilet and that was going to be the end of it. She had a couple of days when she didn't go, then had a day of soiling her pants, which she found upsetting. The next day she poo'd quietly on the loo, was rewarded and that was it! Sounds harsh but we felt w had to break the cycle.....
