15 MO - speech development

Hi

Ds 15 mo today and only says mummy and daddy all his little friends say things like yes, no, good, shoe, sock and starting to think about how i can encourage him along.

He looks at books a lot we read and sing he loves peppa pig and snorts when you say it he understands a lot e.g where's your coat, chair time for meals and he did once say dinosaur completely spontaneously.

Any tips or experiences appreciated.

My sons the same age and he doesn't say anything (well sort of says quack and clock) so I'll be watching this thread with interest!

I would say don't worry about it. Carry on talking, singing, reading & so forth but sounds totally normal to me.

I can't remember precisely with dd1 what she was doing at 15m but I know her language really came at 22m. Dd2 is now 18m & says 'hiya', 'hereyouare', 'no', 'mummy' & 'nana' (banana). She understands pretty much everything & I have no concerns. In my limited experience very few have more than a handful of words at 18m & your DC is only 15m anyway. Don't worry

I have a 20mo who says only mummy, daddy, teddy, apple, biscuit, sibling names.

I'm not worried. Dc1 was a bit slow to begin with and I can tell you, I struggle to keep dc1 quiet now!!

Don't worry, my ds wasn't saying anything at 18 months. He's now just short of 21 months and can say at least 100 words and is just starting to put words together.

My 16 mo DS hasn't said a word yet, just lots of babbling and giggling

His twin sister can say mummy, daddy, hiya, bye-bye, row row (as in your boat) and bubbles, and her brothers name.
All babies are different

14mo who 'talks' all the time, but doesn't have many words. Hiya and ta are her only consistent words, mama and dada haven't really come yet. She seems to understand more - she can fetch a few toys, seems to get 'bath', 'up' and 'living room' etc but that's it. Not as much as other babies they know.

I'm working on the fact that if her understanding of language seems ok - sounds like your son - then it's all fine.

Just keep reading, chatting away, pointing out and naming things, he'll get there in his own time.

Just carry on. Point things out, give them a chance to respond and keep it simple.

Sounds perfectly normal to me (owner of a 16 month old).

Plus a few unrecognisable sounds

My DS2 is 15 months and says 'more' 'cock' which is meant to be clock 'dar' for car, 'baaa' when he sees a ball and 'ta'. That's it! He makes a lot of noises but nothing recognisable. Even mama and dada isn't really used in any contest, just noises. I've been a bit worried too as I'm pretty sure my DS1 had a few more words but now. I know he was speaking in full sentences by 20 months so I am hoping we'll soon be seeing some improvement but again I can't really compare them because they are so different. DS1 was walking at 11 months, DS2 is 15 months and still crawling everywhere, showing no signs at all of walking.

My DS turned 15 months today and also doesn't say anything. He has said mama and dada but that comes and goes. He appeared to say "gen" in the context of "again" but I have no idea if that's what he actually meant. I'm trying not to worry as he understands a lot of nouns and follows some instructions but its really hard not to when other babies are talking.

I've also heard from friends with older babies that some of their DC talked a bit, then realised that their word/s didn't apply in that situation - so 'baa baa' meant singing and not 'hello' - and then they stopped talking again for a bit!

If he seems to understand a lot of what you say to him, then I wouldn't worry.

As long as his comprehension is OK then I dont think you have anything to worry about.

A friends LO didnt utter a single word til 2.5 but as soon as she started you could have a little conversation with her. She knew the words just didnt want to talk.
