Next stage car seats (Class 1)

The archive search facility doesn't seem to be working, so even though this has probably already been done to death, I'm looking for help on when to put DS into the next car seat. He's over 10 months, 74cm, and I doubt if he's much over 8kg yet. (Haven't had him weighed for a while) All guidance gratefully received.

From what I remember they have to be 9kg.
Ds was around 13 mo when he went into his next car seat, but he is a slight little man and didn't weigh 9kg til 13 mo.

you can look at the "find the best" section of this site for advice: car seats - nine months to four years.
i'm thinking about upgrading DD's carseat, she's about 9kg and 12months old, but i figure the longer she can stay in the backwards-facing one, the more value for money i've got from it!

i think the advice is that the longer they stay in the first stage seat the better. so if he still fits in the seat then keep hi where he is as they are the safest.

i had to change my daughter out of her original (you know the carry along ones that come with the buggy) when she was about 8 months but i bought the birth to 4 years car seat so that it wouldn't be to much of a step.

Changeover its at 9kg minimum weight for the next stage seat and it is recommended that babies should rear face as long as possible as they are better protected. Either get one which stays in the car and faces either rearwards or forwards (ie Britax First Class) or wait a bit longer. June normally sees the Which ? survey of car seats so probably worth waiting for recommendations from there and have look at \link{ www.mumsnet.com/pubcats.html\Mumsnetters views} in the meantime.

Thank you everyone! I'll keep him in this seat as long as possible. My concern re: the weight is that if he sticks to his current centile weight/length gain, he'll be about 16 months by the time he's 9 kg, by which time he'll be nearly 80cm, quite a lot of it being leg!

We didn't move dd until about 18 months due to her being so light ! Scrunched legs on their own is not a reason to switch sooner but if you feel it becomes necessary for comfort try one of the reversible ones instead.

Good idea! thanks again

ds3 is 18.5 months and just this week swapped to the front facing seat. He is now 9.5 kg

I've been in touch with Which? and just to confirm, they are doing a car seat test in their June magazine so it should be out soon. They refused to tell me what they were testing though!
