Bike seats

What age can I put my DS in a bike seat? One of those little ones that attaches to my bike? DS is currently 7m, sits up unaided very well and is a solid little thing. We are going to Scotland in may where we normally do lots of cycling ( weather permitting) so he will be 9m then. Will that be ok? The bike seats seem to have an upper weight, but not a minimum weight. Thank you

They have to be able to hold up not just their own head but the weight of a bike helmet as well. 9m is probably the absolute minimum - apart from anything else it can be hard to find a bike helmet that small. You may also want to think about a Wee-Ride or similar - I wouldn't recommend a rear-seat for a baby that small. Alternatively, one of those little trailers might provide a comfier ride for him and be easier to hire if you're hiring bikes.

Golly...we ride with ours and we didn't do that until 2 years. They're just too vulnerable imo and the helmet thing is an issue too.

I agree that a trailer might be better but I would wait personally.

Having googled, people seem to choose front mounting seats for babies...

like this one on Amazon

Rather nifty!

Ours have both been on a bobike (front mounted) from 9months for short journeys. I mostly use our hamax siesta (rear mounted) now though as although they love the bobike and it's nice to chat to them they do look more comfortable in a high backed chair with side support. We have a cruiser (trailer) too which has been a real waste of money for us but it probably depends on the types of journey you are planning to do. As littlies they did look very comfortable and well supported in the trailer. Can't imagine waiting until two years, we use our bikes everyday and I love the freedom it gives us. Both ours have worn helmets that have fitted well from 9 months too, so that's not a problem. By two they will be wanting to be on their own balance bike Smile.

DS1 commuted with me from 8 months in a Co-Pilot Taxi.

DD2 went in the bike trailer from about 3 months - we spent more so that we could get one with an attachment suitable from birth.

The advice is not to put them in a bike seat until 1 but I think if they are quite big and have good head control then a bit earlier is ok.

We used a trailer with a special baby attachment (like a little hammock) for bike rides and then switched to the co-pilot seat once they were a bit older.
